In this day of readilly available air compressors and paint guns I'm amazed/impressed with the jobs I see done with rattle can spray paint. Some high priced detailers around here charge big bucks for painting motorcycle tanks...with rattle cans. I know rattle cans are best suited for small jobs, but I'm curious how many of do complete "high quality" paint jobs (sheet metal, at least) on your tractors using rattle cans?

A waste of time.A small compressor and a low priced spray gun will work fine on trucks and farm equipment. You need a water trap in the air line.Ive painted trucks and tractors with a 1/3 hp compressor.Just give the spray gun a good cleaning and it will last for years.

A friend and I painted a John Deere 1010 and a 2020 with Van Sickle paint. They both turned out great. We found no difference between cans and every can worked perfectly until it was empty.

My friend painted his truck with rattle cans. It looks funny! He sprayed green and yellow (hes a John Deere fan, his first mistake). He didnt mask off anything, u can barley see his tail lights haha. He has the dixie air horn on it and he has the wires out in the open, runnin through the vent window. He decided to make custom exhaust stacks for it. He used a bunch of flex pipe and stainless steel pipe from a milk house. He used a welder to cut the holes in his bed. He also put rain flaps on the stacks and he tuned it so it would flap like a tractor. Good thing he only bought the truck for $300 hahaha.

Howdy,

First tractor I restored for my friend was done completely with cans. After painting my plow this spring with a spray gun I will never go back. It turned out alright but man did my finger hurt after an hour of spraying with the can. God bless.

When I was in elementary school (MANY years ago) my grandfather passed away leaving our family his 1952 Chevy pickup. Being the youngest in the family my two older brothers had this as their first car/truck and at some point one of them primered it with a brush. 5 or 6 years later when I got my license and could drive it to school I used about 20 cans of spray paint and achieved a nice monochrome tiger-stripe blue paint job on it (striped unintentionally by overlapping, etc..). That paint job stayed for 20 years, made me cringe everytime I saw it. :-)

if you look, you can find those spray can holders, it grips the top of the can and you squeeze a lever to depress the nozzle

saves that red hole in your finger after the 5th can

No foolin'. I did an IH 460 utility I used to use for snow and odd jobs here with canned spray paint. Rust Oleum(?) My first two finger tips on my right hand are still numb and that was almost 7 years ago! Plus, I sold the tractor to a friend of my sons and he left it sit outside for a year. All the top surfaces, hood, etc. turned black.
Never again!

I don't know but I'll find out this summer . My M has so many dents in it that it doesn't need the spray gun or paint for that matter but I want to cover the rust and make it look a bit more presentable when I take it off the farm ;) ...Randy

Years ago when I was in high school an old boy in town painted his car with a power puff. Looked pretty darn good too,as I remember. This gent was also known as the village idiot.

I have to get my 2 cents in here! 6 years ago I bought an 8N Ford that was in exceptional condition except for the paint. At the time I wasn't set up for painting the normal way so I used spray cans from one of the farm supply stores. Last summer I took this same tractor on a tractor drive. I noticed a bunch of guys standing around it checking every thing out. I walked up and said something about the paint job not being the best, some of them commented that they thought it looked pretty good. I said "well it only took 31 spray cans to do it."
We all had a good laugh about that. The tractor still looks as good as the day I painted it. It is always parked inside, I am sure if I left it out, it wouldn't look so good. The bottom line is you do what you want to do and don't worry about what other folks think. I know guys that have spent around $5000 bucks for a paint job, I would never do that, but its their business, not mine.

Aloha, On large surfaces , it will look like stripes but it is ok for small stuff. The paint is thin and will need multiple coats for a good finish. I remember in high school, a friend of mine bought a couple cases of spray paint and painted his whole car. He never did that again. LOL

Mahalo,

I have used many different kinds for touch up over the years and most worked pretty well, won't be a professional job, but better than rust. My biggest problem is with Van Sickle paint. Nozzle's always plug before can is empty. One of the things that I do is when I have heated or welded a part, I paint it before it cools all the way down. While part is still tooo warm to touch, I start spraying light coats of paint on it. Dries real fast and then another coat, and another till it's cool. By the time you have picked up tools and are ready to go back to work, paint is dry.

Heck, paint it with a broom if ya want. :>(

Hi folks, I have painted my CASE 300b with spray cans. It turned out good for a working tractor. The desert sunset from CASEih matched good on the different pieces, but you have to keep the spray tip clean. I used Van Sickle flambeau red which seems to fade somewhat easy, but is easy to get and use for touch up. It all depends on what your goal is, show or go.

You will never get consistent paint in one can to the next on a larger job and it will show up after curing and in the sun a while.

Glenn, I have never experienced that problem with the IH2150 in rattle cans. Even when the cans are purchased up to a year apart, the paint always seems to match perfectly.
