Re: B250 DIESEL- serial number answer in reply to LEWIS DYER, 02-18-2007 02:28:58
Hi;

B-250 serial numbers 16027 to 23467 built 1958,making your tractor autumn-ish 1958 build date.

Starting serial numbers on IH always started at 501.

B-250 built 1956 to 1961. First no. 501; last no. 30260.

5 forward & 1 reverse gears. Live hydraulics via engine driven oil pump, NOT live pto single clutch. Diff lock fitted. Disc brakes. 30HP gross.

64 industrial verions constructed 1958 to 1960.

Early versions had twin steering arms, later models had single steering arm using the better steering box designed for the B-275 tractor.

The B-275 was basically the same tractor with an uprated engine to 35HP gross, and a new gearbox giving 4 F & 1 R, with a hi & lo ratio. Built 1958 to 1968.

The B-414 was uprated B-275 with 40HP gross. Built 1961 to 1966.

All models were popular in U.K., despite being harder to start with heater plugs required for the indirect injection engines. They had high 100 Pounds to 1HP weight ratio, and were better for field work than the equivalent Fordson, MF & DB models of the time. All are very desirable today amongs collectors especially for ploughing competitions.

I have a complete listing for all IH tractors built in Doncaster England, and can help anyone else who requires their tractor dating.

Cheers David

B-275 making smoke, blowing snow in reply to LEWIS DYER, 02-18-2007 02:28:58
The B-250 was first built in Car Hill, England, but many were built in India. Mahindra & Mahindra formed a joint-venture with International Harvester and Voltas Limited in 1963. The B-275 was an upgraded B-250. The B-414 was an upgraded B-275 with a slight bigger engine.

We had many B-250s and B-275s sold in my area of New York. But, since we're fairly close to Canada, I can't say exactly where they all originated, but local IH dealers sold both.
My local Allis Chalmers dealer also sold a British diesel tractor around the same time - the ED-40. "ED" stand for English Diesel", just as the "B" in the IH series stands for "British."

I have a few B-275, B-414s, and an ED-40. The tractor salvage yard nearby to me had a pile of B-250s - he often brings them here from Canada. My early B-275s have air-governors and in-ling CAV injection pumps- and I assume your B-250 has the same?

Mahindra is making and selling tractors under their own name and still using the B-250 platform.

The new E40-DI has a three cylinder 115 cu in diesel. Everything else is almost identical to a
B-275-414 including manual steering and a 8.3 gpm hydraulic pump, except it has a single
clutch. It is rated 39 engine HP @ 2450 rpm and 31 pto hp.

The C4005-DI has the 144 cu in four cylinder diesel that was introduced in the B-250 and B-275 and hydrostatic power steering that was first offered in the 424 and the dual clutch to
give live pto. It also has the 8.3 gpm hydraulic pump. It is rated 39.5 engine HP @ 2300 rpm
and 31.5 pto hp.

The C4505-DI has the 154 cu in diesel that was introduced in the B-414 and also has
hydrostatic power steering and dual clutch. It has 8.3 gpm hydraulic pump. It is rated 43 engine
HP @ 2300 rpm and 34.5 pto hp. All of the gearing on these three models, pto, etc, is of the same design as the 275, 414, 424,
444 line of tractors.

Here are some photos taken yesterday of me beating my little B-275 pretty hard blowing some snow - 7 feet deep in places with a Deere snow-blower. I usually use my 1020 Deere tractor, but it's a 1/4 mile away in a barn and with all the snow - will be stuck there until springtime.

Nice pictures of you getting the cobwebs out of your B250, but she was built in the old Jowett car factory in Bradford near Leeds in Yorkshire, however some of the later B250 family ( last of the 434s) were built at Carr Hill Doncaster and were said not to be as well built as a Bradford tractor. Still, its no matter now as it is all shut down and gone to Europe, only the Basildon in Essex CNH assembly plant left in England now making tractors.

J Scchwiebert is correct, the B275 was sold in the USA, the B250 marketed in Canada. Most were 1958 to 1962. I have not been able to find a site to check my serial for year but around 1960 catches them all

You may be correct. But, as I recall both the B250 and B275 were marketed in Canada. I was a kid then and I thought those were such nice compact little tractors at the time. As I recall they were either two sizes in HP of the same thing or the B275 followed the B250. I'm thinking the B275 was a year or two later sersion off the B250. I definitely remember seeing both versions at the IH dealership. We had a B414 for a while.

Are you in Canada? The B-250 is a British International, I don't remember the B-250 being marketed in the US. I remember when I was still in high school when the local IH dealer was promoting the "New B-275" tractor so I would say probably 1958 was the first of them at least here, don't know about Canada and or the B-250. Their history gets involved and later on you will find that Mahindra is also involved.
