My SIL is a brillant computer programmer, takes good care of my daughter and son, so I have no real complaints.

However, he is NOT a mechanic. He just has no interest.

He has a low time, like new JD 332 diesel garden tractor. Last summer he complained that it was running hot. While visiting I serviced it, showed him the screen in front of the radiator (with an inch of grass in front of it) and told him to keep it clean. That fixed the heat problem.

All went well until he decided to clean that screen again. He also decided that the engine was dirty and he would spay that off too. The engine was hot; he heard a loud crack when the water hit the engine. When the steam finally quit there was oil and antifreeze dripping off the pan. He could not see the source.

He wants me to go there and fix it.

I could use any BTDT advice as to wether the block or head broke, is it worth fixing, fix old engine, find used engine, availability, where to look, etc.

I don't even know what tools to bring. I live in the mountains west of Colorado Springs and he is in Gardner, south of Kansas City.

Since all you guys are in the grips of cabin fever, I am sure you will jump right on this.

Personally I'd be looking for a new SIL. Giggle.

I had one like that broke everything on my boat just getting on it from the dock.

COFLY:
I'd humbly tell him that I thought it might be more than I'd be able to help him with. Suggest to him that he take it to the local dealer and get an idea of what happened. My local dealer will come pick up a tractor if you ask em - so he might go that route. Either way, now is a good time of year to have a mower looked at versus early April!

You could suggest that if it is not a serious repair then you'd certainly be glad to assist - just get a pro to give him a diagnosis. If the diagnosis is bad then just have the dealer go ahead and repair it - or trade it in on the spot for another. That's what I'd do.

Was the engine running at that time? If so it sounds like he fed it water instead of air and the engine tried to compress it! Not nice in a diesel. Let us know what you find.
Regards, RAB

I just emailed the SIL asking three questions; was the engine running, try again to find the source of the leak, will the engine turn over with the starter.

I'll let you know.

Thanks

I agree with RAB. I cannot imagine what you could spray with a hose on a hot non running water cooled engine and get coolant and oil to leak out with a bang. If he shot enough water into the intake of a running diesel to cause it to hydraulic lock it's junk. Let us know what you find.

It sounds rather like an incident I heard about many years ago here at a local coal mine. They had just put a new engine in a Caterpillar dozer, took it out to try it. Unfortunately they had ommitted to put water in the radiator..... .Brand new engine buggered!

I suspect that he has probably done more damage than what it is worth to repair. Probably better off replacing the engine or the mower all together. I have an uncle that lives in Gardner that at least at one time worked on mowers, etc. My email is open if you want his name. I'm sure he would do your SIL right.

I thought you were still down here in South Texas, are you back in Colo already? Either way, there is a simple solution. Tell him KC is just too far out of your way and that all he has to do is put the JD on a pallet and ship it to you and you will take a look at it for him. No doubt he'll trade it in on a new one before he'd go to that much trouble.

I'm still in Texas. Be back in CO the first of May.
Daughter and SIL came to visit and told me the sad tale.

Tell your SIL that if he has no interest in how to properly take care of equipment, have someone ELSE mow his lawn!!!

I know, I know, I wanted to say much more than that; it was such a sweet little tractor.

Buuuutt, in the interest of family unity and previous experience, I didn't.

I had a 430 with a 60" deck. With the side shields there's no where the engine heat could go except back on the operator. I always cleaned mine with compressed air. I got a F925 now with a 72" deck, much more cooler and nimble.Sounds like your brillant sil turned a nice 332 into a basket case.

It doesn't sound like it CAN be fixed. My brother is the service manager at Heritage Tractor in Baldwin Ks. have him get a hold of him.He can probably tell him exactly what cracked on it.Jim
