Just put my 39 year old paint horse "Nugget" down tonight at about 11:15 PM here. We got him when he was 3, so he's owned this place for a lot of years.
Me and the old fella taught my wife, my daughter and a few nieces how to ride.My daughter is 2 years younger than he was showed him in eventing and equatation. I started him out as a reining pony, but my work and my daughters english won out.
I suppose I'm on here 'cause I don't feel like sleeping and I miss the old fart a considerable amount. I guess that's enough, thanks for listening.

Larry, Sorry to hear of the loss, I've got a 26 year old gelding and a 23 year old mare, both been here more than 20 years, never even been in a trailer, I'll feel like you do if I lose 1. Where in NE IL are you? I'm in Antioch. John

I know little about horses, but 39 seems to be a very long life span for a horse. My grandfather had a team of work horses in the 1940's that lived to be about 29 years of age and we thought that was a long life.

Hi Larry , Good friends are hard to lose . My wife has one too . A 26 year old mustang she got at age 10 months direct from the high country in Colorado when she lived out there . Your horse deserves a spot on the farm that will be respected . We have a pet cemetery in a corner of our windbreak that's around the house . I know how hard it is . I've never been close with a horse but I have with dogs and cats . We have a spot for Blue already set aside for a day that I hope won't be for many more years since my wife adores that horse . I can't say it'll get better because you know you'll alway's miss him . You were a heck of a care giver since he lived to that age , you did exceptionally well by him . He'll wait patiently for the next ride with you . ...Randy

Larry, I too am real sorry for your loss. My F-I-L always said, and he has spent many, apon many a year a horseback cowboying in the NE New Mexico and Texas and Okla. Here goes..."A Man can consider himself a Blest man if he has had 1 good horse and 1 good dog in his life." The type of horse that at any given moment you know what your horse will do, and at that same moment that horse knows what you want!
In my 49 years I have had both and lost both to death, so I share your loss. There will be others, though they will never compare to this Ol Friend of your, As your last act of favor, find your horses favorite place there aon your place, get a backhoe and bury him. My heart is out to you and your family at this time. It is amazeing how animals get to be Family to us. Anyway the Lord will help ya'll through this time!
Later,
John A.

larry...so sorry for your loss. he wasn't only a horse, he ws a family member after being around so many years. sounds like you must have given him a great life and lots of love and care to last that long. so be happy for him...he got to see and know a lot more than most of his kind thanks to you. when you do finally sleep, i know you'll have many pleasant dreams of him in his glory days. "so long old paint"

mike

Larry,
I'm really sorry to hear that. it's amazing how animals can be so theraputic, and also so intertwined in our lives that they really do become like part of the family. They're always there through thick and thin and are always willing to listen without cluttering the conversation with alot of push back or questions.
