thought this was funny sounds like stuff i have heard before,

Clint

The national Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had covertly funded a project with the US auto makers for the past five years, whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four-wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find in 45 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2 percent of fatal crashes were: "Oh, CRAP!" Only the states of Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama and Texas were different, where over 89.3 percent of the final words were: "Hold my beer and watch this!"

My son joy rides / test cars for a living, he gets to joy ride them many times on weekends. On a recent car he opened the trunk so I could see the onboard computers. The trunk was probably half full. It had two boxes in the trunk, the one on the left had 42 clusters (excess of 15 wires per cluster) going into it and the other had perhaps three times as many. I'm a old man, but it sure brings back childhood memories of beating the ever loving crap out of a new car.

Get his---probably a few hundred of these cars with less than 10,000 miles on them go to the crusher each year after they beat on them. He said if they have to have a new tire put on to drive it across town to the crusher, they do not remove it or anything from the car. No don't even ask, because they have to be witnessed being destroyed. An poor white trash like me can't aford anything in the newer models.

These reports"ve been around for some time now, including claims that some owners warranty work was denied becuase the dealer could show excessive speed (abusive treatment) or failure to follow factory maintenance requirements, and rental outfits assessing surcharges because of speed or taking the rental off the pavement, but I don"t know if it"s ever actually happened.
Many commecials here lately re" Onstar unlocking peoples cars, etc....I wonder how long before someone claims hackers got into Onstar, had them unlock their cars...

If you bought the car should'nt the black box belong to you? Should'nt you be able to remove it if you want?

On a related note... in reply to Clint Youse MO, 02-15-2007 17:33:52
What's the difference between a northern and southern fairy tale?

Northern ones start out: Once upon a time....
Southern ones start out: Ya'll never gonna beleive this sh#$

Not sure if it is all but there are some newer vehicles that do have black boxes on them that record speed and brake applications about 15 seconds before an airbag deployment.

How does the Black box know that the airbag will deploy in 15 seconds ?????

yup, pretty much all vehicles from the early 1990's on foreward have the "black box" it works a s you say. it will record an event, ie air bag deployment. it will display most anything the sensors and on board diagnostics read on the vehicle. brake pressure, throttle position, speed, engine rpm ect.using a laptop and the software (about 3 grand for the software) you can get a complete print out of what happened. most accident reconstruction engineering firms use this.

Was visiting a friend of mine who runs an auto electric service shop. He had a customer's vehicle in with a transmission error code. Slipped on acceleration onto a freeway. He was able to go back and get all kind of information, like throttle setting, ambient temperature, speed, and several other engine performance details at the time of the "incident." Was telling me that the new generations of computers will be able to monitor emissions, speeds, etc, and talk to roadside terminals. You car could get an emissions test just driving down the road - just wait for the ticket in the mail. Or they could shut you down if you're speeding. Big brother is here!
