I used to use the red rags and old t-shirts to wipe up grease and oil when working on a tractor.
Problem is when the other half came along...she said they may mess up the washing machine. I never noticed it, but to keep her happy I stopped using them and went to those blue towels on a roll and in a box.
I am in the middle of a 450D now and those things are getting kinda costly.
What do you guys use?
Maybe I should just find an old washer and use it for rags...but then I gotta buy a dryer.
Maybe the blue rags are cheaper after all.

Go to the uniform rental place and see if you can buy their old rags that are not rentable anymore. Been doing this for years, get whole garbage bags for little or nothing. When they have been used up just throw them in the burn pile.

The ladies at the church we attend have a rummage
sale twice a year. Old clothing that doesn't sell I get for zippo.
My wife helps by cutting the stuff into useable sizes. Can't beat the price.

I just use my old shirts and jeans etc, and go with Chux wipes if I need lint free. Don"t bother washing them just throw "em out. This pleases Mrs. Burnie.

Bill, for oil & antifreeze I use sawdust. I have loads of it, it soaks up well, then gets chucked into the stove. The rags I use get used from not too dirty jobs [hands etc] to the worst ones [big grease gobs] last, they go in the stove too when they are just unusable.

I cut old tee shirts and towels into squares, and cut the toe out of socks and split them down the middle. The greasy ones get trashed and the ones I dry my hands with go in the washer. Not having a wife helps in that regard (among others). :)

I use a combination of white or blue paper rolled towels and for the extra heavy & hard to clean stuff and for cleaning fluids, I get old shirts from Good Will - the cotton kind or sweats. Mine, too, are not worth washing when done and, if I just use the paper ones for wiping hands & light duty, they last a good long time, plus, if it's just water, I hang 'em up to dry & reuse later. Got a small clothes line in the corner near the heater.

I still use the shop rags.

I load them up in a big bag and run them through the laundromat in town. Wash them twice and use lots of soap. Works great.

Washed them once in the house, and I don't need to mention the outcome!!!

You should NEVER DRY SHOP RAGS IN A DRYER!! There are still traces of petroleum products in the rags, and that could easily lead to a fire. Just air dry 'em, not like you got to worry about wrinkles.

They do not replace all towel requirements but I get a lot of mileage out of news papers for cleaning hands, tools and machinery in the shop. They contribute a lot to reducing the need for something better and more expensive.

Wait 'til she goes out shopping, then throw in a sneak load of rags. Dry 'em later or cocktail 'em in with your legit laundry. That's what I do. Otherwise, when low on rags, go through your T-shirt draw then ask for more on Xmas.

Theres a place in town that sells rag bags, big trash bags full of old cloths. My wife picks them up for a buck and then looks through them and saves what is still good then cuts up the stuff that we can't use. I then have rags for the shop. When there dirty I just throw them away and the price is right she gets stuff and so do I. Most of it is T shirts, sweat shirts etc.

When I still worked in the factory I could acquire some of the red rags from time to time, but I never attempted to wash them. By the time I was done with them, they were no longer recognizable anyhow. I now use the blue towels on a roll. If you shop around a bit, sometimes you can find deals on them.

Have been using what ever is the cheapest paper towl on the grocery store shelf, what ever is on sale. I have boxes of scrap clothing rags, but find them odd shaped, not that absorbant and clumsy compared to the little paper squares.
