What problems come with loading a used windows xp
upgrade on my windows ME? I have a chance to get windows xp upgrade that is not on a friends computer anymore and would like to know what kind of troubles I will have doing this.I have heard Microsoft makes you jump thru hoops to do this.

If the Windows XP has been installed and activated on another computer it will be unusable. It cannot be activated on a second computer and will expire in 30 days.

you can get windows xp oem version for $90 from tiger direct(tigerdirect.com), it is a complete version, supposed to be for "original equipment manufactors"(hence oem version) but is a full blown version, just without the box, even has valid coa numbers if you are interested. hopefully you have your driver disc still as you will need it if you do a full install

First of all if you install a non oem (original copy of win-xp) on your computer, You are"nt eligible for upgrades or patches because you have to verify that it is genuine (check microsoft .com for more details) Windows-xp and Vista sets up hardware codes to make sure it is only for that computer (The Original one) and it has to be activated.. As far as Windows Vista, I just bought a new system with it installed (using as we speak) and no problems so far (So i"ll NEVER go back to XP as it had to many error messages and unfixable BUGS!!

This is a oem disc that has been loaded on another
computer and then removed.I was wondering about getting it loaded on my computer, account of the COA being used before.

Upgrading to Win XP from Win ME usually gives a lot of problems and many do not recommend it. I agree with Chris that the best way is to wipe the disk clean and install Win XP on a clean "slate" which I have done a couple of times with good success. As Chris said, you would need to feel confident to do this.
It is possible that a Win XP upgrade disk will not work on a blank drive--may need the complete Win XP. I also agree that XP is the most user friendly OS I have ever used, and I go back to DOS 3.1, I think.
Hope this helps.

put all your DATA on CDs or a different media form....

then do a fresh install of XP, erasing all your old stuff.....including anything to do with ME.....

then reinstall all your apps and put your data files back on and you are good to go.....

BUT, if this is not something you are used to doing, (backing up, reformatting, upgrading, installing device drivers, etc) or if you don't have a spare computer to get files or help off the internet I would not recommend doing it yourself....

I don't think ou should have any big issues except for drivers. Before upgrading I'd look for and download XP drivers for your video, modem, sound, and network cards. I find XP as being one of the better Windows OS's much better then ME.
When you get XP and all the drivers that need updating installed restart it a few times and then get all the Windows updates. Don't try the new Vista. It is very processor and memory hungry and not as user friendly.
