I posted a picture in the pieces and parts (1965-67 Ford 4000 - Inside Engine Block) of the block of a Ford 4000 diesel. There is a chip knock out of the cylinder wall below the piston movement. A local engine shop says to clean up the sharp edges and let it go or bore out the cylinder and sleeve it. I need help from you more experienced guys. What do you all think? If sleeving the engine should all cylinder be sleeved or is it ok to do only one? Thanks much ED Hentz

I would like to thank all of you for the information. It looks like we will punch all three cylinders and sleeve them since the pistons are standard size. We will be replacing the piston in the cylinder with the chip in it. the chip appears to have been cause when the cam broke into three pieces and drop a chunk onto the rod and piston skirt area breaking the skirt and twisting the rod. It also spun the bearing on the crank. The other bearing surfaces are all ok and close to original size, so we will clean up the damaged area and make the others match it 's dimensions.Hopefully keeping everything to readily available parts. Again Thak you

I think I'd sleeve it. That looks awful close to the bottom ring line... You should also consider that those blocks were known for cavitation from the inside, so sleeving them is not a bad idea in general. So, I think I'd sleeve it.

You should sleeve it while it is out and handy. Yes you can do only one cylinder and it will be as good or better than new. Good luck.

Is that machinist willing to warrant his work? That missing chunk looks to come right up to the bottom of the piston movement. I'd vote for sleeving that cylinder to whatever size the other holes are after a cleanup.

Not sure what the others will think, but I have seen engines like that run fine with no problems. If it is truly below where the piston runs, and there is no other damage it should be ok. BUT! What caused it, and are there other issues that can not be seen? My guess is a bent or broken con rod? Saw one a few years ago on a Toyota diesel that had picked up water through the inlet. Hyrdaulicked in the combustion chamber, bent a con rod and broke a piece out of the liner. Was fine with another rod and piston fitted.
God Bless,
Rex
