I had a 1985 Ford F100 with the exact same problem. I gave it to my son several years ago, he drives it to work every day now, it has over 300,000 miles on it.

Dealer replaced intake and exhaust manifolds, problem remained.

An independent garage mechanic called me over to look at what he found, the carb top half was loose from the bottom half. He said it was a common problem. Result was a vacuum leak.

Did not, as I recall, even have to remove the carb to fix it.

Yeah,

Those old 6-pop Chevys would do that too. You could shake the air cleaner. :>)
