I been planning on buying a dump truck soon for my small grass cutting and odd job business that I run on the side. What might you guys suggest I buy? I am thinking of an 80ish Chevy/GMC or International brand, 2-3 yard dump, and diesel. What is a good model to buy and what is there to look out for on these trucks?

I had a 1970 F350 one ton truck with flatbed/stakebed that I converted to a dump truck. It was a flatbed with wooden sideboards when I got it. I got a dump frame off an F600 and put it on it between the truck frame and the bed frame. It would carry 3 cubic yards easy. I could carry 3 tons of gravel on it no problem. The bed was 7x9 feet.

Wish I still had it. I loved my dump truck.

Internationals with the 466 are very good and cheaper to work on. I had a Hino that was excellent except it only had a 6 speed tranny. It turned super sharp and got about 16 mpg when empty. I'd buy another one. I had a GMC 6500 single axle with a 366. Good truck but only 8 mpg on a good day. I took the box off and put it on the Hino. The Chev/GM 8.2 litre diesel isn't one of their better engines. Get a commercial vehicle inspection! Done by an independent shop. Get the seller to include it for the purchase. When I bought the GMC, I had to spend $2000 on a complete rear brake job. I sued and got back most of the money I spent because it had an inspection. The problem was that the seller of the trucks BIL was a mechanic and put new brake pads on worn out drums. The seller took it to an inspection place that he knew from where he worked. They believed him the brakes were all done and didn't pull a wheel off. The one brake drum actually split and was almost in two pieces! This happened while it was loaded. I hobbled it along to get it unloaded and in for repairs. We had a meeting with lawyers at the court house and I took the drum there. The guys from the inspection shop eyes almost popped out when he saw the drum. He tried to say that you have to believe people what repairs they did on their vehicles. What's the sense of the inspection? Just giving you a warning. The funny part is that the truck was a low enough GVW that it didn't need an inspection. The seller paid half of my settlement. He wasn't too happy. Dave

Just wanted to add that up here if it is a single axle with hydraulic brakes, you don't need any special license. If it has air brakes you need an air brake ticket but that's all. Hope this helps. Dave

I have a 1985 model 1600 International with a 4 yd box. Mine has a 6.9 diesel and 4 spd Automatic. Empty I get 12 mpg. Pulls good rides nice. Watch for rust underneath cab by front door post. In Michigan I don't need a CDL but do need a chauffers license and a DOT health card.

I was part owner of a towing/truck repair business where we ran 2 Internationals with the DT 466, 1 automatic, 1 six speed. These trucks had over 200,000 miles on em when we got them. Both proved to be rugged and dependable, plus got over 12 miles per gallon of fuel. 2 Chevy C-60's with a Caterpillar six, one automatic one six speed. These were 100,000 mile trucks when we got em. The only thing bad about either one was their thirst-5 mpg was good as it got. A '79 GMC 454 gas 5 speed/2 speed rear. Good ole truck, bought cheap, and at 5 or 6 mpg less expensive to operate than the Cats.

Be aware that any commercial vehicle over 10,001 pounds to 29,999 pounds may not require a CDL but will require the operater to carry a DOT medical certificate.
