Older Carb type. Been doing this along time. When cold, idle is normal. When warmed up has an exhaust sound like a valve out. Fum-fum-fum-fum. Rev up abit and is ok. Compression check when hot shows 160 to 180 in all 6. Pulling plug wires shows all are hitting. At idle engine shakes some. Revs up sweetly with no shake. Had this truck 23 yrs. 133K and still has factory set of Motorcraft belts. Bought a new Ford in 99 but just could not give this one away so kept for odd jobs. Any experienced comments would be of help. Thanks, LB. might add--- have changed plugs, coil, plug wires, dist cap, rotor, new carb, same fum fum fum out the tailpipe.

Check for a EGR valve stuck slightly open, remove and check passage way.vaccum leaks at manifold were always a problem with these trucks.also the 1 bbl. carbs. would work there way loose at the mid section u might want to check that. Also make sure the mechanical advance in distributor is not sticking. These engines were also known for lifters giving out around that mileage !
BUT THEY WERE GOOD ENGINES !!Hope this helps. Randy

Like everyone else has said, I'd be looking for a vacuum leak, But before taking anything apart, attach a vacuum gauge to a port on the intake manifold and get a reading. Normal would be 17-21, anything below 15 would indicate a leak. Dave

Boot,

Take the intake/exhaust manifold off and promptly deliver it to the machine shop to have it plained. They all warp.

Sounds like air intake leak try spraying wd40 around intake where it bolts to the head check carb base gasket. Those things keep working loose all the time. Hope this helps Steve

Check for cracked ex manifold or leaks where pipe bolts up as these can cause that burnt valve sound.
