OT: welding spatter

About 4 months ago, I purchased a 90 amp 110 volt flux core wire feed welder. I love that little machine and am doing all but the heaviest welding with it with good results.

The only problem with it is I am getting a lot of spatter.

Is it something that I am doing or is that just the nature of the beast?

Thanks in advance.

Dan

they make a product that you spray on before the weld that the spatter will rube off . at your local welding supply store .

RP3...i don't know about your clarke welder, but my hobart has the terminals marked and also has a diagram inside the access door that shows which way is which without having to put a meater on it. you might want to look at yours for something like this.

dan...i'm no expert in this field, but i can tell you this. if you COULD hook up a tank of argon gas and weld with solid core wire with your machine, you'd see a big difference. so, yes...it's kind of the nature of the beast. the sheilding gas keeps impurities away from your welds and causes alot less spattering.

I have a gas and flux wire welder. If I don't use the gas I notice lots of splatter. I think it is normal, but I am far from a welder. NorminN.B.

Normin...i don't know if you meant you had an either/or, "gas and flux wire welder" but it's my understanding that you want to use solid core wire when welding with the sheilding gas. you need to reverse the polarity when switching from one to the other also. sorry if i misunderstood and you already knew this.

Gas shielded flux core welding is also used on certain specialty welds, and is fairly common on heavy structural joints when MIG is used instead of arc. I work with some very good welders; if you need NO splatter TIG it an be good at it.

Spatter is pretty much the norm. Using a nozzle spray on surfaces near the weld can reduce sticking spatter to a useable degree. Covering areas with sheetmetal will be fool proof. Setting current, polarity (if equipped) and nozzle to work spacing can also reduce spatter. Good luck, JimN

jim...everything you say is true. nozzel to work spacing and angle of nozzel can all help reduce spatter. here's what one welder told me when i was asking for tips when i first bought my mig. he said "if it sounds just like frying bacon in a pan you're doing it right". it's kind of a simple tip but it's really kind of true. if it's a steady "sizzle" sound when i'm welding, i'm usually making my nicest welds. if i'm skipping and popping alot i have more spatter and rougher looking welds. the spatter sheild and nozzle spray do help alot when cleaning up.

I've got a little Clarke 110volt flux core unit too. Which polarity is right for flux-core anyway?

Thanks Mike!

The Clarke can be used for either gas or flux-core so now I'll need to put a meter to it to see which way its wired.
