***************CREDIT CARD SCAM***************

The State Travel Office received the following statement today from a
state traveler. It is important for all travelers to be aware of this
type of scam.

"The morning after I checked in my telephone rang and a female voice
stated that she was from the front desk and was transferring a call to
me. Then a male voice came on the phone stating he was Paul from central
reservations and indicated there was a problem with the credit card
number which the room had been paid for with. I stated that there should
be no problem, that the card was held by the State of XXXXX XXX, and
everything had been alright when I checked in the previous evening. The
male stated that he needed to confirm the card number. I told him the
card was held by our fiscal department and I did not have a physical
copy of the card. I told the male I would go to the front desk and
resolve this issue. The male then said he needed my personal credit card
number for security and no charges would be made to it while this was
resolved. I again told him I would go to the front desk and resolve the
issue before I left for the day. He then became quite insistent stating that I could not resolve the matter with the front desk, but needed to
resolve it with him. When I told him I was not going to give out any
credit card numbers over the phone he hung up.

When I went to the front desk, as I stated I would, the front desk clerk
stated there were no issues with my room or the credit card, and that
she had not transferred any calls to my room. It appears that the
individual directly dialed the room and had a somewhat elaborate attempt
to steal credit card numbers.

You might want to pass this on to other state travelers as a cautionary
tale."
