MENOMONIE, Wis. -- Authorities said a 77-year-old man who died in a barn along with 25 head of cattle and a dog was a victim of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Verlyn Schleusner, of the Town of Wilson, was found Monday in the enclosed barn where a tractor had been left running.

The Dunn County Sheriff's Department confirmed on Tuesday that the death was caused by carbon monoxide fumes from the tractor exhaust. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Time for CO3 detectors in our barns? Maybe. In my new house I'm having a relay installed so that when the Smoke or CO3 detector goes off, it starts the attic fan. I don't want to wake up dead. And, before you say it, yes, the fan may feed a fire, but it is the smoke that kills you long before the flame gets going. And CO3, as has been noted, will kill you in your sleep.

Young fellow - friend of mine - got to the point of falling down inside a hog barn, was running a gas pressure washer inside with the door open, but no airflow that day. He said it was the oddest thing, he didn't pass out, but couldn't move anything. No long lasting effects. Fortunately. Family found him pretty quick & got things sorted out without falling over themselves....

Godspeed.
As a note: When your eyes start burning it's time to get out.
