Neighbor has been trying to start his 966. He said the metal angle between starter housing and selenoid smokes. What do you think, bad connection on both ends ?

Smoking a connector is clear evidence of dirty fastening Do clean them up. But, as indicated below warming is critical. If the starter is dragging internally due to bushing wear, it will draw massive amps and toast itself. If it is, it will need to be rebuilt. JimN

Sounds to me like he has already smoked the starter.

In these kind of temps, ya have to plug that tractor in for an hour or two. Make sure we have good batteries and good cables.

Hope ya get 'er,

Allan

The nicest thing about the 986 we rented a few times was the either kit that was on it. Start cranking it, hit the either button for a split second and it'd cough a little then fire right up when it was just below freezing in the morning. Easy to do without over doing it, but of course it makes it much easier for some people to over do it as well.
