Meyer E47 Hydraulic Plow has just about got me beat. After several minutes of operation, after the oil is nice and warm, the plow stops operating. It won't go up or angle left or right. Just stops. I go back to the shop, point a halogen shop light at it, let it warm up and then it works fine. I use only the very expensive Meyer oil, that supposedly has de-icer in it. It is bitterly cold as you guys know, so could the oil still be icing up? That doesn't make sense because the pump is in use and gets warm. I'm getting really frustrated because I still haven't finished plowing and it's quitting time. I hope someone can help. Thanks folks.

Well, I went to plowsite.com per Harold's advice and got some help. Lots of people recommended ATF instead of Meyers fluid. I knew it was icing up, but it didn't make any sense because the $10/quart oil is supposed to be a de-icer. Oh well. Went to Wal-mart and got some ATF. Drained the lines and reservoir as best I could(the oil was milky and even had chunks of ice in it), hooked everything back up and refilled with ATF at 1/5 of the cost. It worked great. This morning at about -5 degrees it was a bit sluggish but worked great. The only problem with ATF is that when it gets super cold, like last night, the paraffin in the fluid separates and blocks passages. So far no trouble and I saved about $15 over the Meyers fluid. Thanks for all the replies. I'm done plowing...now comes some serious shovel-time >:(

It's ice in the pump. What happens is over time the top seal, the lift ram and the angle rams get pitted. Water/ice get into the pits and is drawn past the seals. The water/ice then circulates through the pump and refreezes. Meyers pumps are somewhat finicky about this. Check you rams for pits and replace, also get new seals installed, then flush and refill with fresh fluid. Meyers has tiny ports, so it doesn't take much to ice them up. Sometimes a few ounces rubbing alcohol or dry gas will help, but the best bet is to keep water from entering the system. In a pinch, I've run ATF in Meyers pumps, it doesn't freeze, but it does slow them down.

I ran them for several years and Myers plows were nothing but a pain in the donkey . Every year i would change the oil clean the screens and use only Myers oil and when ya needed then in the worste storm of the year and the coldest night is when they would drop kick ya. As one of the selonids would burn out or ya got a speck of dirt in a valve it was always something with then use to carry two units in the cab so just maybe i could make it thru the storm . The vary best snow plow that i ever had was a Western , lifted faster had more power and plowed better . You will probably have to pull the seloniods out and get the magnify glass out and pull the valves out and look for any tiny speck of dirt that may be sticking a valve , there are three valves plus the pressure releif . It is wise to have the service manual as it is a HUGE help on them also the special socket to remove them.

The first thing I would check is all the electrical connections. The cold weather makes the connectors contract and when you hit it with the light the connectors warms and expands. Try cleaning all the pins and receivers in the connectors.

I don't know the answer, but try this question on www.plowsite.com. You have to register to post, but a lot of professional plow operators will see it, and I am sure some of them will be able to help you.

On mine (E46), lots of water had settled down in the rams, I'd angle the blade the first time and boom she would die, couldn't lower it, could only angle one way etc etc. Rebuilt it and one of the solenoids was also dirty. Flushed probably a half cup of water out of it even though I had water absorbing oil.

Put her back in service, a week later the rams had drug in enough snow into it to freeze up again. I think some sleeves are needed or somthing. Its been parked a couple of years now, using the blower on the tractor now.
