Well, I got stuck in the mud this fall and blew reverse trying to rock my 86 Chevy G30 Van to dry land. It's got a 350 engine and automatic transmission and is rated for 1 ton. While it's not roadworthy (to much frame rust) I do use it on the farm and would like to keep it going if I can do the repair real cheap. Don't know anything about transmission repair. Should I just try to get a another transmission from a junk yard or is it likly I could fix this one?

Pete

Hey Pete,
More than liikely in an 86 1 ton van, it`s a 400 trans. If it is you probably broke the reverse band.
Bad part is that it is way in the back of the case. So everything has to come apart.
The other hard part is finding a good one anymore, most of them are 20-30 years old now and with scrap being higher lately, I know alot of the yards around here are crushing older vehicles like mad.
Still, you should be able to find something and if your pulling it yourself, you won`t really have any labor into it.
If it is a 400, one thing to check is to drop the pan, and there is a round cover held on with 6 bolts. Take the cover off and there is your band apply servo. If you are lucky the servo just broke. That would be all you have to replace.

Thanks guys...I'm going to check it out as soon as some of this snow melts. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will just be a bad servo. Sure appeciate the help. Have a good day.

All you people like me who still have to run old stuff, I have a salvage yard I deal with for my older stuff. They are called Memory Lane Farms, located between Bushnell and Marietta Il. The phone number is 309-772-3618. Prices are VERY reasonable. Hope this helps.

Pete,

What transmission is it? What shape is the tranny pan; kidney shaped, rectangle with a corner chopped off, or full rectangle?

Boy! If you took out reverse, you were pourin' the coals to 'er. :>)

Not sure what transmission it has and I got snow up to my eyeballs (not a figure of speech either) right now, so I doubt I'm going to get under that Van for awhile. Yea, I did get a little carried away in trying to get it out of the mud!
I'll post again on this once I can find out which transmission it has.

Okay,

Also, see if manual 1st works; as in engine braking or if it just free-wheels.

I would think there would be a good chance to find a good one in a wrecking yard. If you found one check the oil if it is still pink and doesn't stink there is a good chance will be good. I have never attempted a auto trans rebuild, it may be just like an engine rebuild, just replace all the worn patrs? Check with Allan I think he did that for a few years. You would probably spend as much for kit as you would for a good used trans.Too much frame rust ? Do your vehicles get a yearly safety check from the DMV.Stan

I would wager that your van has the TH400 auto tranny. Honestly I would find another good tranny to put in it. It would be much easier than tearing the old one apart to fix it. Or if your not going to drive it on the road anymore just use it as is and be care full how you park it. Just my opinion. Mike.
