Friday morning out at home it was 24 degrees below zero. Got up to a nice high of around 10 degrees. Now, four days later I wake up and it's 44 degrees out. 68 degree change in low temps in 4 days...gotta love Colorado weather...

Re: ozone - the difference is the location. High in the atmosphere the ozone absorbs ultraviolet radiation, freon eats up the ozone up there and allows more UV in. Ozone down at ground level is caused by the reaction of unburned hydrocarbons in the air. Down here where we live, ozone eats little holes in your lungs. If only we could move it up where it would do some good. Ray

3 more inches of that white stuff temp is + 1 i heard orrin samuelson say once some wether man ? had done a study of weather 50 years in past and compared to weather at same weather stations in present day . at several of them at what had been edge of town or city was now in middle of town or city . parking lots , houses , stores , schools , malls . in some cases he had to go 50 miles away so environment was same as 50 ago . not much if any changes over time of his study

Same down here in Kiowa.

Had to replace the springs and shock absorbers on the thermometer!

Maybe we should look at all the money chasing this global warming thing. Think of the study grants to be had. Think of how important some of these folks sound.

Well, it really depends on what you do for a living as to just how much global warming effects you personally, for me, I am a maple sugar producer in Vermont, and the weather is directly connected to production. I really started to worry about the season when after the first of the year, it warmed up to 55*F for a week, which is completely wrong for that time of year and it felt like sping and the start of the maple season, which was still about 2 months early. I am glad I didn't decide to tap like some people did, otherwise I'd have been in trouble because now it has dropped down extremely cold during the last few weeks and pretty much stayed there, which is typical of this time of year. The 55*F January weather sure scared everbody, including the state officials, whom soon annouced that they wanted to take a real serious look into global warming since the maple sugaring industry is big buisness in this state, it is not only a tourist attraction which brings in alot of money into the state during fall foliage and also sugarhouse tours and maple fairs, and maple syrup provides alot of folks with additional income. If we had no maple sugaring, there would be alot of land owners who couldn't pay their taxes. The last 3 seasons in a row, my production has been declining, the weather just hasn't turned out right for a good season, either warming up too much and staying there or freezing and staying there. In order to have a good season, it needs to warm up above freezing during the day and drop down at night, but the last few seasons, the weather just hasn't cooperated for us and the season lasts only about a month, after that your tap holes dry out and/or too much warm weather will sour the sap. I am taking a hard look at investing any more money into maple sugaring at this point since its future is uncertain, however I hope for the best.

if you lived in tenn. you'd figure out how to distill the stuff, bottle it and make a REAL profit! ok...just kiddin'. i do hope your maple serple crop does well....i love the stuff. my cousin in canada taps his trees and makes his own and i usually get a jar or two every year. we trade him for home-made blackberry jam.

i don't know whether to believe this global warming theory or believe it's just a natural trend in the warming/cooling of the earth. it just seems like everyone is always trying to jam one theory or the other down your throat about anything and everything any more and ya get to the point you don't know who to believe or trust. we just keep trying to do our part to keep our emissions down, recycle what we can to keep the landfills from covering the earth, and let trees grow on our place to boost the oxygen supply and use up the CO2. the one theory i refuse to swallow tho,,,is the one where if we all turn in all our guns, it will stop crime.

I think you hit the (nail on the head). They tell us there is a hole in the ATMOSPHERE that opens to various degrees and is found to be closed on other years.I think HE has provided an escape valve for whatever the non-believers are worried about. My two cents.CENTAUR

Scientists have been studying global warming for some time now, and I have also tried to do research on the topic myself, and if you talk to 20 different scientists, seems you will get 20 different answers. Yes, burning fossile fuel is bad, and does put greenhouses gasses up into the air, but, humans are responsible for putting only about 5% of the total greenhouse gasses up there, the other 95% is from natural sources, but weither it is that 5% thats the cause of global warming, nobody is for sure, but some scientists think it is the cause. Others think that our putting greenhouse gases up into the air isn't the leading cause for global warming at all, and the planet is simply on a natural cycle that some think may only last 20yrs before going back the other way, but they aren't sure on that either. One thing I do wonder is what caused the last ice age?, so considering that, it would seem very plausible that the planet is simply on a cycle.

Talk about global warming how come those P-38s that landed in GREENLAND are 200 ft deep in the ice since 1945 they should be melting and ready to fly.

I think you'll find the ice up there is melting some, but your too late, some rich guys already went up there and dug them out, atleast 1 of them has been all restored now. Did you guys see on CNN ice falling and breaking up in the artic today?. They showed a polar bear on a iceberg floating away.

I teach environmental courses At St. Cloud State University. My review of the issue is (short here):
1} The cycles for natural change do exist. We are supposed to be on a cooling part of a modest swing in the ice age direction (but we are not)
Glaciers all over the world (been to some US and Canada) are melting off at a rate that is in many cases hundreds of meters (yards) per year in end length, and thinning in depth.
We need to take it seriously. The key feature is very changable non standard weather patterns, not cold or warmth. JimN

Yep, those glaciers are going away, anybody who doesn't believe in it needs to watch the Discovery channel. They have shown pictures and video footage of how much the ice has melted in just a years time and over a number of years. Our summers have been getting hotter and thats also a threat to the sugar maples, since they only grow in cooler climates.

If you look at the picture of my tractor a few threads back on this forum you'll see the date of January 7. I drove it a couple miles to the fairgrounds with a light jacket on to take those pictures and was quite comfortable. Like Gary says, its 11* here now with a real feel of 1* and an east wind of 8 mph. BRR! And a half inch of snow this morning.

I have a question: a couple of years ago we had to change our freon in the air/cons because there was hole in the ozone layer in the atmosphere, now on the hot days, weather forecasters say not to mow the yard because of it being a high Ozone day??? Am I being led in a circle??? Next question, that no one has asked, what about the wobble of the earth's North axis and the effects on the weather. You never see or read anything about the earth's wobble in its orbit.
Please, don't forget about all of that trash and satillites that are circling the earth and blocking out the reflected sun rays....
Just had to get my 2 pennys in on this.
