Hi guys ,my bro has a Hahn Harverster ,,funny looking thing that strips the limbs off trees and chops em to length, lots a hydraulics and stuff ,Problem is ,last couple days different hydraulics on the rig will stop working and then start working again,it is Bloody cold round these parts right now ,around -10 F ,,
certain rams will not work ,shut the rig down and after a few hours they start working again .I figure he's got water through the hydraulics system ,,but who knows ?? When stuff freezes where I work we pour alcohol in the lines to try and free things up ,this probably isn't smart to put into a hydraulic system is it ???

Phil/ Up here in the northern half of MN. Some people are still using the hahn harvesters. The type you see the most are the one operator systems. I've worked on many of them and ran into this before. On the ones that run rods right to the control valves, it is usually an obstruction in the intake [inside the tank]. Something floating in the oil posibly. If it is on a control bank that is solenoid operated, sometimes theres been circuit breakers heating up and cutting out. The you come back a little while later after it has reset and everything works.[To much load on the circuit] Jim

Phil: I didn't know any of those still existed, where in H are you anyhow? That thing has got to be 40 years old.

From your description and interaction with the others, I don't think water in hydraulis oil is the problem. Shutting it down will not cure that, it will just let the filters freeze harder. I think it's electric over hydraulic. My neighbor had one of those, I never knew much about it, however he was always fighting electrical problems. I heard some of the discussion on it, sounded like an electrical night mare.

2x4: You are thinking of the tree length delimber harvesters mounted on excavator chassis.

The Hahn was a unique bird, looked like a massive hay wagon with a truck frame mounted on the chassis. On one end it had a 10-12 foot stroke delimber in that frame. At center was a cherry picker loader and controls, plus a chain saw type bar or shear for cutting wood to length. The wood fed through under the loader-cab area to other end where there was a kick off to cradle for processed wood. Some had a cradle on each side for sorting wood. Most folks used one side for 8' and the other for the longer wood. As I remember they had a truck type rear end at delimber end, pinion powered by a hydraulic motor for moving short distances in the working area. At the front they had a steering axle and a tongue for towing them behind a truck from one site to another.

How did I do Phil, your name sounds familiar, I think I know where your situated. Are you, maybe I should say were you related to Ron.

Are the controls electric? in reply to phil lowe, 02-05-2007 18:51:34
If the intermittent functions are on electiric controls, I'd look into low voltage. Maybe a freezing battery or a ground problem.

If it were my machine, I would NOT put anything but oil in the hydraulic system.
