Here is an e-mail about my son Lane that our district Athletic Director sent out today to the whole district staff regarding an event a few days back that made me as proud as I could be. I am still beaming about this and how he did something many people wouldn't have even thought of ever doing let alone an 18 year old high school kid. How kids can make you proud when you least expect it!

“Last night the Ogden Wrestling team wrestled Iowa Falls and Humboldt in Humboldt. Humboldt has a senior who is a Downs Syndrome child. He has been out for football and wrestling and they wanted to know if we had anyone who would wrestle with him. Their coaches said he really just wants to roll around on the mat. He has no skill and you could easily pin him in seconds. I am very proud to say Lane B. said he would do this. They wrestled for the full 6 min. Lane allowed him to score points and technically beat him. I have to tell you it was one of the most moving moments I have ever witnessed. This young man had his hand raised as the winner. In fact there were two winners, Lane B. and this young man both. We often times wonder about Character, and what our kids can demonstrate to others. Both these kids got a standing ovation and not very many dry eyes in the gym. When the official raised this young mans hand he looked and said "I WON"????? I'm proud that Lane is a part of the Ogden program. I'm proud that he made a difference in this young man’s life yesterday. I'm proud to not only nominate him for our Number 1 Club but I hope you are as well. It was a very proud moment for all Ogden Fans last night. Character really does count. I'm trying to get the video that this boy’s parents were taking so I can share it with all of you. Brian R., Athletic Director”

Brent, I live in Iowa and consider Mac a friend. I was listening to his show when your son was on. I have to tell you that I had trouble driving as the tears in my eyes made it hard to see. I agree that your son is a great honor to your family. in closing Mac said, Lane your a good kid. He was wrong Lane is a good man. You should be very very proud. Lane made me proud to be from Iowa. He made us all ook good.
Thank you and your wife for a job well done in training up such a fine man.

Thanks for your kind words. Yes he is a good man, and I can't take the credit for all of that, he has acquired much of it on his own somehow. This kid gets up at 5 am everyday except Wednesdays, drives 5 miles to a hog farm and works until 7 when he showeres out, drives 5 more miles to school where he lifts weights until 8, showers again, goes to class until 3:30, wrestles until 6:30 at practice, then comes home and starts it over again. He also work every other weekend 16 hours and wrestles Sunday nights with the AAU team's younger kids to help mentor them. Somehow he also fits in being Student Body vice president and church youth group. Whew, now that I look at his schedule I realize why he isn't too eager to do any chores at home :-)

Where are you at in Iowa? We are about 10 miles SE of Ogden, just on the west side of the Des Moines river from the Ledges State park.

Brent,
What weight does your son wrestle? That is a great thing he did and will never ever ever forget it as long as he lives. Being a former wrestler myself, I know what dedication it takes to make "weight" and condition. Your son, give him the biggest hug he's ever had!

He is at 135. He went to the state championships 2 years ago but he had knee surgery this past December so had been out since then. This meet was his first one back since surgery and the last meet of his high school career. He pinned the two previous opponents that night before wrestling this third match. A Des Moines radio station got ahold of the story and had him drive down yesterday (about 60 miles) and all 3 schools (Elem, Middle, & High) played it over the intercom when it was on. If anyone wants to listen the station gave him a copy on CD and you can hear it on the link below.

Great story Brent. Sometimes when you want to get down about the younger generation a story like this comes along. Looking forward to seeing the video.

Having a Down"s child myself, this story really makes me proud. I have had so many people do such kind things for our girl. This young man typifies what our God and our country should be about! I sit here in tears and thank you. Please pass on my thanks to your son and let him know that he has blessed our family all the way down in Mississippi. God bless you!!

Hi Brent,

Next time you see your son, shake his hand for me and say Thank You from T_Bone. What honor he brings to your family.

You know until this year my grandson kept me wondering if he was ever going to grow up and make himself proud. All I can say is one year can make a huge difference for a young man.

My congrats to your son!!! This world would be a much better place if there were more young men like him. I know he doesn't know it now but someday there will be a STAR in his Crown for his actions. It does not cost anything to be nice to someone and this will be one of that boys brightest days!! You have a right to be proud, Character counts!!!!
