I was wondering if there is any way to know if my 560 I just purchased has had the transmission/rearend mods?? I thought there was a stamp on the serial plate but dont see anything on mine but the normal serial numbers.

the serial number of my tractor is 7524 so I believe that makes it a 1959.

what should I be careful of, what caused these to break?

Did IH keep any kind of records as to the serial numbers they updated?

I am just kidding, those have probably long since been thrown away - HA

Is there some physical way to tell short of tearing it apart.

My book shows they made 21573 Farmalls in 59.

The ones that were updated in the field had a triangle stamped on the serial plate. I don't know when they were updated at the factory and I don't know if they made any other markings. I have a 62 model so it should have the factory update in it. According to one of my books the factory update occurred in June of 1959. It doesn't give a serial number.

Just because it does not have the triangle does not mean it has not been up-dated, and even if it has not been up-dated, it is already 48 years old and still going strong. Don't worry about it.

I agree with Rusty, Our 460 is also a 59 and does not have the triangle, but from what I read in the book the early rear ends (M type) failed right out of the starting gate, and you would have to look hard to find one that hadn't been updated by now.
