Just keep trying - that is half the fun! I've missed out as many times as anyone, but:

I was at a sale one time after a JD two-cylinder -there were about 5 JD tractors in a row - but they went sky-high... But the crowd seemed to disburse a little after they sold, so I waited for a "funny looking" little tractor I wasn't famililar with that sold a few hours later...

Wound up bringing home a super nice little Allis Chalmer's U with round spoke rears for $50 - I guess no one noticed it since everyone was focused on the JD's.

A few months ago I was at a sale more out of respect for the family than anything else - lo and behold, the auctioneer dragged a 1938 Ford pickup out of the barn with the 85 horsepower V-8 in it. Only one tire was even flat - it has 40,000 miles on it and I found an oil change receipt in the cab dated 1953 showing 21,000 miles at that point - I got it for $500. The auctioneer hadn't even listed it on the sale bill...

You just never know at an auction...

Howard

Dead man sales are very pricey and always will be. Family member are buying back the tractor or what ever. Town estate sale are like garage sale. Seeded to the rafters. Private sales are good for tractors and not running tractors at auction are second for me.

I try to pick and choose my sales and my weather. Estate sales, forget it, too much flea market and small junk there that brings too many people. Retirement sales, foreclosures, etc those are the better options. I check out the Sunday paper with the auctions listed. There are normally 50 or so on the same day within a 200 mile drive. I try to pick the ones that I think will have the most people, and the ones that have what I want. If its on the second list and not on the first, then its one I might try going to.

I'd say if you are looking for tractors cheap or even reasonable your not going to find them at an auction ! Everytime I go to an auction stuff goes way higher than I could ever get for it. The best deals are going to be private sales. Ask around, scour the papers and fence rows and old barns. You can even place a want ad.

In papers like Old said. Most of them don't mail out flyers anymore and expect you to view the listing online anyway. Here is one that list many auctions www.globalauctionguide.com

Well when I was still going to them I would look in the ad papers we have in this area and watch for sales that had tractors and equipment. I've gotten some real good steals over the years, but lately I haven't been able to go because money has been to tight

I have found 2 auctioneers in my area who have good websites-usually pictures and all. Once you have something like that bookmarked, you just need to check them for new auctions. Even if they don't have pictures ready, they usually have a detailed list of what is available.

The deals are often found where you don't expect them. I go to alot of auctions. Went to one that had late model Ford tractors. Fopund 3 old 2 cylinder era cylinders and a bunch of other stuff. They had JD in the 50's but changed to Ford. The JD stuff wasn't advertised.

If you ever find out the secret, let me know. Every time I go to an auction where there is something there I think will go cheap because no one will want it, they come out of wood work. Last week I went to auction that had two JD pedal tractors, here I am thinking the crowd is small maybe I can get these at a fair price, not a chance. One (4020 replica) went for twice the price of a new one, the other was still high but probably worth the money it was a 60 replica but in rough shape. So if you figure it out let me know. I hear these stories all the time but never been in the right place I guess.

Pat,

I do believe it is a relative of the family who is having the estate sale that is the fortunate one who finds the tractor at these
"so called estate sales"

but that's just my opinion

Estate sales here are the most expensive ones.. As an auctioneer once told me, " A Dead Man's things are always worth more than a living ones" He went on to say that things would sell much cheaper at a sale due to divorce or foreclosure. The part of estate sales I do not like, is the fact that the actioneer often brings in a bunch of his own stuff.. IMHO, that is not fair to the family..
