Well I got the tractor here yesterday. To say the least it was sort of TOUGH to get it started and drive it off the trailer in the snow! I mean I had to pick the coldest day of the year to Get this thang here. Any ways we had to push it down hill into the drive way, not a big hill though more like a small slope.
In the yard I charged one of the batteries more with the car and it then cranked up after about 15 seconds of cranking and plooms of smoke.

Then I drove it for a minute not enough to get it warm.

Here is my first question I am just barly too tall to fit in the grage. The smoke stack is too tall. Could I cut this 1.5 foot pipe that is after the muffler without messing something up?? It seems totally logical that I could shorten this by a foot or more and stick another exsuast flap back on.

Secondly and this is a big one.... I went on ahead and took the radiator out, (wasn't too tough to do). I sent it to a radiaor shop and hope to here back from them today..I called the sales guy to ask him what else I could expect being that I already paid him the money, he does not have to hide anything now!

He said that the hydrolic pump was rebuilt and the Transmision had 6th gear replaced and 8th gear replaced!!!!
Now this transmision work was NEW to me. My thinking is that this could be a good thing. The Sales man preceeded to say it was slipping out of 6th gear and 8th gear. So, they had the syncronisers replaced!! In one instance I think "well at least a mechanic went through the tranny and it should be solid!!"or should it be?

What sort of things would this indicate to you?? Would you be worried about anything else? Would it have been that tough to just overhaul the whole transmision?
What do yall think about this?? What does it say about the whole condition of the tractor? What ever it is,IT IS WHAT IT IS now. I bought it, just would like to here some more other opinions on what else to expect...

Now that you have everything drained and the radiator repaired, its a good time to put in new anti-freeze. I would suggest that you install the new extended life anti-freeze for diesels made by Shell (Texaco). This is the red stuff. You won't have to worry about sleeve pitting or wearing the water pump seal out. I have this anti-freeze in all my diesels; most for about 10 years.

Hey Raleigh congradulations on your tractor purchase. I had the same height problem as you with my exhaust in getting my 3020 in through my shop door so I took pipe off for now. I just wanted to mention that im also looking for a ROPS for my tractor but I think this could become a height problem as well. I found out today from JD that the make a foldable ROPS for a 3020 and possibly a 4020 as you mentioned you were looking for a ROPS as well, about $200 more than a standard one. Anyway have a good one eh?

You can cut off the extension and it won"t hurt, I would suppose it has the round muffler instead of the oval and they came with the short pipe. However, you may want to consider figuring out some way to put it back on the tractor when you go to the field. As noted below with the short pipe you will inhale a lot more exhaust and it will be noiser. In cold weather I alwys let mine run awhile before shutting it off, not always to operating temperature, but darn close. You want everything to get coated with oil to reduce wear on internal parts. Mine has a tank heater and plugging it in makes it start easier and the oil flows faster.

I've put a lot of hours on those 4020s. If the salesman said that the synchronizers for 6th and 8th were replaced, that is probably good enough. We used 5th gear quite a bit, most of the plowing, disking, and other tillage work was done using that gear. 6th gear was used for rotary hoeing, and 7th and 8th were strictly for the road. The rest of those 8 gears were seldom used.

If you have to buy any parts from Mother Deere it will become real clear to you why they did not change everything in the transmission! I think you are going to worry yourself to death over this until you get a plow on the back and get that stack blowing smoke, so do it as soon as possible...LOL.

My opinion is to just run it I find all of its quirks & fix them as they come up. Hey, thats part of the fun of an old tractor. Don't know much about the 4020 trannys, probably will last a long time. Post some pictures of that thing ASAP.

Raleigh, you can completely remove that exhaust extension, and put the flapper right on the muffler. Might need to heat things up with a torch to get it off though. Otherwise just take a hacksaw to it. That muffler extension is an accessory, intended to keep the exhaust out of your face and lungs.
