Have any of you gone through an ROTC program? My oldest son will be 14 this summer and has always wanted to become a Marine and a police officer. The high school he"ll start attending in August happens to have a Marine ROTC program and they accept 9th graders. Of course my son is very excited. Just wondering if anyone"s been through a similar program.

Many times the discipline recieved in these programs help a kid to go through life smoothly and learn respect for their leaders in all walks of life later on.

The ROTC does not necesarily commit one to active service Your son would learn a lot of useful skills such as leadership, marksmanship., military history, just for example. He would have a chanch to see if he liked military discipline before making a longtime committment. I think he has nothing to lose and a lot to gain. I wish him well. jed

My question is as a parent and war vet are you ready for it? My son did a tour in the Middle east and I sat on pins and needles till he got home every phone call and every newscast puts you on pins and needles. The US military code is No man left behind and Officers are the last ones out.If you're ready to deal with it and gain a few more gray hairs go for it and if they make it home there are no prouder moments than on Veterans Days and Fourth of July parades than to see your son standing beside you saluting the flag it's a feeling that is unmatched in the world.God Bless CT

I took the senior ROTC program at the University of Mo, and was comissioned a 2LT in 1951. I was paid 27$ a month for taking the course and owed the Army a two year tour of duty. That money helped a whole lot for me to stay in school I have never been sorry that I did. It is an excellent progsram for any young man. Our country needs a lot of young men to step up and atand up for our country. I would say to him----go for it. J Doak

I was in the AF ROTC at Iowa State College (college not university in those days) with a 2nd Lt. commission in 1951 with 2 years active also. Reflecting on the whole experience, I feel that I gained a great deal from it. Times change, of course.

Years ago I went thru the AF ROTC program at the University I was attending. Back then it was strictly done at the college level only. I think they started it in HS to get enrollments higher.
Back in the 70's it was a 4 year program. You made a committment after 2 years and then you got a pay check. At the end of 4 years you did 6 years of service. When I drew a number 37 in the draft I figured I better do something. It was strange because I don't win lotteries, etc., but my birthday made me a winner that time.
