O/T Coyote problems

we have a lot of coyotes in our area and they particularly like the hay fields. We lost our little dog a year ago just before Christmas to them. She was 14 years old and survived as long as she did because she looked like and walked like a skunk. She was an avid mouse and mole hunter and would be right out there in the new swaths looking for a victim. The coyotes would be out there as well but never seemed to give her a second look. However her luck did run out. So if you are looking for a small dog that has a good chance of surviving around coyotes get one that looks like a skunk!!! this picture is of her guarding a carrot that she liked to dig out of the garden.

She died Sunday night. Suffering from mange, she succumbed to the cold and possible infection from frostbite sores. The timber guys found her under their truck Monday morning.

She kept the rodents in check, provided me with endless stories for urban friends, and occasionally allowed me to impress a visitor. On more than one occasion I was yakking on about the coyote while touring the woodlot, and out she walked, checked out the new voices, and trotted away.

I looked at the carcass this afternoon. She was quite well fed, even plump, and about the build of a standard poodle, maybe two inches shorter. I saw her last spring through my telescope, buck naked, plump and pregnant. A biologist expressed amazement that she had survived a winter without hair. I guess her luck ran out with this cold snap.

We'll miss her, but six years is a pretty good run for a wild animal.

I like to see wildlife like that around and as long as they don't bother me and mine, I sure leave 'em alone.

A lot of folks don't. They shoot 'em on sight.

You do know that coyotes will call dogs out and sometimes kill 'em? Especially small dogs.

Had that happen before.

But, dogs have that "wild" ancestorial, inborn thing deep in their brains and can be pulled out by those coyotes howlin'.

A little dog doesn't stand a chance against those undomesticated coyotes. Heck, they even eat their own when they die.

Come right in the yard.

Not a problem to me tho as they don't bother a thing. They are scavengers, don't leave that big of a footprint and will always clean up the roadkill.

Now, the rattlesnakes, weasels and mountain cats are another story entirely. They will go after the live stuff. :>(

Was fine and up sucking at 7:00 pm new born.

10:00 pm mother went over the hill to eat with other cows.

7:00 am it was gone and the hide and bones were all that was left.

Coyote tracks all around it.

But they are in our yard also and don't seem to bother much.

Now I need to worry about the yotes too.....

I have two heifer calves on the ground now....and a lot of coyotes around....wanna come down and shoot a few... it would be nice to have someone who can actually hit a coyote and not something else.

I'll be sending you this ugly little black SOB. They say that they are he!! on wheels for coyote protection. :>)

You get it broke and maybe my grandkids would enjoy it also.

Buy some sheep and chickens for your place. YouŽll be adding coyotes to the other list.

Mother says we are now protected since we have the little reservation throw back. Think she is a donkey without the ears. :>)
