OT: Any Tips On 4L30E Auto Trans?

OK, maybe this is a form of cheating, but I don't intend it that way. At the vocational school, I'm in an automatic transmission class and we're rebuilding a 4L30E transmission...same thing that's found in an Isuzu Rodeo and such. Instructor says it's basically an electronic version of the old Chevette slushbox, with a front extension housing for an overdrive gear...and that's what it appears to be, with some bolts being standard and some being metric.

My question is for anyone with experience working on these transmissions: are there any particular troublesome areas to watch out for, or any tips and tricks that might keep me from making common rookie mistakes?

We've already disassembled it, with the help of AllData ["No-Data" to some], and we've started resealing and putting things back together...including the 3rd gear clutch pack, with that silly inside snap ring.

This tranny is fresh from the Subaru-Isuzu plant in Lafayette, and has never been installed in a vehicle...yet. The instructor's intention is for us to disassemble and reseal this "fresh" tranny, and then install it in one of the school's vehicles while another group rebuilds the one they took out of this Rodeo [or was it an Amigo?...I forget].

Anyway, if you know any particular problem areas to be aware of inside this tranny, I'd appreciate a heads-up. Thanks in advance.

Don`t forget the 3rd clutch checkball in the valve body. If you do you`ll get a bind-up in 4th. Don`t ask how I know.....

Thanks.

One of the guys in our group took a pic with his camera phone as we pointed to where the check balls go in the valve body...now, as long as he and his phone hang in there, we may be OK on that.
