I've seen two JD s/n tags for sale on ebay in the past 2 days. One from a 3020 and the other I don't recall.
Who would buy a used S/N tag. You don't suppose someone would..... .....Would they?

Tractor Serial number plates cannot be legally sold in many states/provinces. Report the seller...

How I long for the days of ole ,pre 1987 is about where I pinpoint all this tag troubles beginning. Before that a tractor was what it was and what you saw was what you got. You were buying a tractor period. Not paying a premium for the 1st ,last or special versions. Nobody knew and nobody cared either. We were just happy to have a new toy to play with or back then they were even used in the fields ! It's getting real hard for someone to get into this hobby today unless they have a pile of dough.

Anybody dare take a guess and put a name to what happened in 1987 ( I think I have the year right ? )that sent the tractor hobby into a feeding frenzy. Here's a clue-think green--

You can still buy running John Deere A's and B's for around $1000 That does not seem like much money to get started. There is a tractor out there of some color or price to fit every budget. If I pay 10 grand for a tractor, thats my business.

What happened in 1987??

I've been into old tractors for 10-15 years now - don't guess I heard that story... (or was too busy farming back then to pay attention)

The first 2 cyl. expo. No one single event did more good and harm at the same time. The good- tons of new vendors selling parts nos and reproductin and used.Plus a renewd interest in collecting. Which makes a thin line to cross that can also lead to the bad. The bad-- well you will see from the hornets nest I stirred up from dareing to question peoples motifs about all this crazyness over serial tags. And lets not forget all the contraversy over the remaking of certain key parts like spoke flywheels, low radiators for G's,and now NEW serial number tags themselves. And all the tractors and serial tags and parts being stolen has really increased.

Speaking of serial numbers, several of my projects have serial numbers stamped on engine block. My 29 model a ford, 35 Chevy grain truck, and my M38a1 military Jeep. I have no idea what year my jeep is as I purchased it without an engine and the engine I put in it was taken out of a crate from military surplus. I had to assign a year in order to get a title. So I waved my wand and made it a 1952.

It"s one thing to collect ID tags, but a completly separate issue to be using the wrong tag on the wrong machine. I agree that it takes away from the real collectors who strive to make their equipment as authentic as possible.

Forget it and save yourself some time. Scams are as common as snowflakes these days, it would be like emailing the site coordinator here and telling her that it's snowing outside.

SN tags should only be sold with the engine block, if at all.

Well, that would complicate things, as the tag on a 3020 is at the rear of the tractor, on the transmission/final drive casting!

I don't think that is Durango's point and he probably isn't aware of the location of the 3020 tag. It is just an ethical issue and introduces inaccurated information into a topic that true tractor collectors with legitimicy take seriously. If your tractor needed a block and you purchased one from salvage that had a serial number it seems to me the tag from your own tractor would be the proper one to use, not the one from the block.
