Just to clarify, I have two twelve volt batteries on my 560 diesel.

I have my John Deere A still on 6 volts and it rolls over and starts just fine wonderfully. Its not any different than starting one by hand.
Trust me, you cant roll one by hand any faster than a 6 volt system. My hand starters pop right off with a couple whirls. Keep in mind all of them have a different way of starting.

A whirl with the choke pulled, then no choke and half throttle. Two whirls with half choke and then no choke. Choke it till it coughs then no choke.

Everyone knows their tractor and that is the best way I have ever found. A pattern arises for each one and then winter comes and it gets cold and then really cold and we have to relearn these beasts.

I would seize the opertunity and convert to twelve unless it is a rare highly prized show machine. Everything works better and batteries are very common. Never had a comment at a show yet.

Al, YES it affects the electrical system. I am NOT a fan of the 8 volt battery system ESPECIALLY since a good working 6 volt system ought to start an A just fine even in the dead of winter. In the event shes a slow cranker I would buy the heaviest rated good quality 6 volt battery that physically fits into the battery compartment and use 00 Gaue battery n starter n ground cables. Then if she still cranks slow GET THE STARTER AND/OR SWITCH REPARED/REPLACED.

The 8 volt system is an oddball, batterys are rare, the light bulbs will glow bright but burn out faster, if its a coil ignition system instead of a magneto and theres no external ballast used, the coil will run a bit on the warm side and the points wont last as long....

Get a heavy duty battery n change to 00 Gauge cables n fix any charging or starter problems n you ought to be fine and shes still original and not cobbled up is my advice

When in the battery and electric business ,I always kept a 8 volt battery (dry) in stock for customers that requested them. Also converted many over to 12 volt system. The 12 volt seemed to work best in most applications as you could use your truck, tractor,or other 12 volt equipment to boost it or vice versa, also it usually starts faster and saves wear on your starter.

If you are going ot SHOW tractor Keep 6 volt sys , if you are going to rse tractor year round change to 12 volt will give a lot less trouble .

I've found 6 volt batteries to be very expensive(75 bucks) I have switched several Farmall c's over to A 12 volt system. I can buy a 12 volt battery for $40, a one wire alternator for $35.00 and a resistor for $4.00 and already have the wiring. So I can change to 12 volt for $79.00.On a couple of the tractors I've changed over I also had to use a 12 volt coil. They were about 12 bucks.I plan to keep the tractor to plow a garden. What do you think.

6volt batteries are 30.00 here The Cub and A B C tractors are easy starting tractors unless you have a bum battery or starter.

I run an 8 volt in my ferguson for about two years and just uped the regulator a little with no trouble. however when the battery went bad and the gen was not putting out the best I switched to 12 volt and an alt.I know a lot of guys on here say to just repair the 6 volt but in my opinion (and remember this is an opinion so no need to give me grief for it)if it was my tractor and I was using it on a regular basis I would either increase it to 8 volt or change it to 12. if you go to 12 remember to put a resistor to the coil so ya dont fry your points.

8 volt batterys or at best a stop gap fix for other problems and in the long run can/will cause other problems. With out doing something to the chargeing system you will have an 8 volt battery that wall at best have about 7 volts in it since the chargeing system as is will only put out 7 volts or so. Plus when you need to charge it up you run into another problem since chargers for 8 volt batteries are like tring to find hens teeth

I could never recommend the use of an 8 volt battery. Get the existing electrical system, including ignition, in good condition and that probably will solve the problem.

8 volt batteries are just a crutch for a 6 volt system in need of maintenance.

Check your battery cable size, more than likely over the years someone has put on one to small and with wear in your starter things don't spin like they used to...

Bottom line, either go all out and go to a 12v set up or go through and redo the 6 volt with new cables etc... don't waste the time on an 8 volt battery.
