How many out there are also interested in airplanes? Grew up watching them fly over and usually could identify them.Have a number of plane storys to tell to those that have an interest. But to get back to what I saw yesterday.About 4oclock we heard what sounded like large radial engines and when I located it looked like a ww2 b25 bomber. Must be one of those from CAF at Midland. Saw them years ago when they were used as trainers out of reese airforce base near Lubbock TX Always love that sound.

Not much on civil aviation, but I have been following combat aircraft since I got my first Janes Combat Aircraft when I was 7. Anything from 1939 on. My grandfather survived a B-17 crash on one of the Regensburg shuttle raids. My other grandfather worked P-51's that flew escort. I was in the same squadron 50 years later. I worked weapons on A-10s for four years and got to get up a cozy with most models 'cept them secret black ones. The highlight of my childhood was when a fighter buzzed my parents house. Nowadays, I have the History and the military channel to calm my nerves. On rare occasion, I also get to watch the Navy jets practice on a power plant near here.

I have yet to go to Wright Pat, but my brother has. Does anyone know where the Enola Gay is? I plan to go see Bocks Car next month. I have seen the B-17 flown by the CAF, and would like to see more. Do they have a static display during the off season? Thanks for any and all responses.

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron

Aaron, the Enola Gay is at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazr Center in Chantilly, Va. I remember parts of it going to the Smithsonian. Then protesters who didn't want history shown raised a stink. As I recall there wasn't enough room for the entire plane anyway so it may be best that it was moved.

PPSEL, about 100 hrs. or so, mostly in Cherokees but some in 172's. I'm currently looking for an 80, hoping to find one oriented north and south and level enought to put a 2000' strip on, farm the rest with antique equipment (that's probably all I could afford anyway).

Got interested in homebuilts about a year ago, neighbor airline pilot is building a Teeny Two (sp?) in his basement. I am interested in the Savannah or the CH701; looks like they would work well off of that grass strip, if I ever have it.

If you boys ever get near Dayton Ohio, please check out the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum,
addmission is FREE, they have a cafeteria there too and an IMAX theatre, and a gift shop.... it's so big it should take you a day to see it, plenty of airplanes!!all military and even some NASA stuff. They have the B-29 " Bockscar" that dropped the second A-bomb. It is a destination for some folks, the parking lot has cars from everywhere and lots of visitors everyday..

When I was in the USAF I flew as a crewmember on cargo aircraft. We made a stop at Guam to refuel. This was in 1968. Before we left Wake Island they told us we would have to be on the ground by 11:30 in Guam. At around 11:50 the landscape came alive with moving aircraft. I watched 52 B-52s take off. They rolled down the runway one min. apart as they headed to Vietnam. A site and sound I will never forget.

Ken, Guys, I grew up in the shadow of airplanes but new got to pursue that avenue. Real airplane engines are Round!! LOL! Dad...Crew Chief of a P-51 pilot. All members from pilot & Dad on down were Texans. He and Pilot for fun would fly under bridges in France My Uncle on my Mom's side, Navy flight instructor, @ Corpus Christy NAS. Was leader of a flight of 3 on a routine training flight that let them very close to his and his future wifes parents homes. They bussed his FIL home them His parents home all the neighbors were watching for they had called ahead to say they would fly over. Long story, short ....one of the other pilots got to doing loops and crashed an AT6 Texan, The pilot died in my mothers arms, after my Uncle landed his plane to assist in gettin him out. There was one H3LL of a stink pitched by the Navy over this deal.
OBTW he was a Charter member of the Conferderate Air Force. He and my Dad have since passed on.
Back to B-25s CAFs "Devil Dog" done up in Marine Blue lives 6 months of the year here @ Georgetown, Texas and the other 6 months in Houston, Texas. It is a frequent sight in our Central Texas skies from time to time. There is also an old pre WWII DC-3 homebaseing out of Georgetown too. There is NO sound like that of a Radial!
On an another airplane note I have lost 2 Spray pilot Friends in the panhandle of TX/OK! over the yrs. Plane crashes tent to be quite serious, No such thing as a small, or insigificent wrecks or crashs!
Later,
John A.

I grew up in Corpus Christi. When did this happen? I remember the story and think that I may have been a kid when this happened. My father (WW II vet and has passed on) used to work at the base for the Army.

Been by Cannon air base many, many times heading for New Mexico's mountains.Sometimes would see and here those F 16's flying over. Love that F 111 on the pylon.

Wayne,

I have been looking at a Gryo-copter too. All the pilot I know think I am nuts.

There are sites all over the web and places you can go fly with an instructor.

If you're really risky you can buy a used one on ebay from time to time.

I wasen't very interested in air planes until I Joined the Navy. Since there wasen't an opening in the Seabee's I choise avaition mechanics school. After school I was sent to SanDiego to a squadron of Sea Planes (water landing only) They had twin 18 cylinder engines. One of the best sounds to hear is one of those engines starting. Also worked on a P2V the plane had four engines Two radial, and two jet. Later on our squadron got new planes they were the Lockeed P3's. They were four engine turboprop. Ever since thoes days If I hear a plane going over I will stop what I'm doing and look up to see what it is. Love those old planes Stan

I used to be real interested. I was so interested that I spent over 34 years working as a Propulsion Engineer for Boeing. Worked on the 707,727,737original,SST,YC-14,757,7J7,777,HSCT,
737 New Generation. Retired as Chief Engineer for Propulsion Research and Preliminary Design for Commercial Airplanes. I was fortunate to participate in the "shinning times" in commercial aviation when each new program made a big inpact in the industry in terms of airplane capability, payload-range, fuel burn, noise, etc. Commercial aviation flight technology is about as good as it's gonna' get until some big breakthrough in aerodynamics and/or propulsion and/or structural capability occurs. i.e. we'll be flying at M=0.83 +/- and airplanes will pretty much all look the same. The focus now is on the manufacturing technolgy,i.e. how to build 'em cheaper. The new 787 will use composites for the majority of the primary stucture, which is a first in the industry. And me? Hell, I'm raisn' cows and keepin' old tractors running! And lovin' every minute of it!

I see or hear some come over everyday and night from Cannon AFB by Clovis NM. Yes we were right close to state in panhandle of TX and about right on their flight and landing path. CAF had a B29 and B24 and I saw both of them at Clovis airport 3 years ago. We had F111 s flying over for years and then the F116s but they say those will leave soon and be other things flying over us. We get see Ospreys out flying pretty often on test runs from being built in Amarillo and they are are escorted with F116s and may soon be more at CAFB. Always neat to see the big C4s come cruising over too.

From 58 to 62 USAF Bergstorm AFB - 43151E AFSC
Jet ACFT General over two engines MECH . That means I worked on B-52 D's and KC-135 A . I changed & rigged flight controls & landing gear systems . Also helped maintained 3 C-47 & 3 T-33 support ACFT . Did rigging on all C47 's on base no one else would attempt it . Loved the work but hated SAC . while in AF got private AC & Engine Card to work on AC and Certfy safe to fly when I got out I found that card and $0.10 would get you a cup of coffee . The air port repair shops would hire you for $3.00 hour use your card and charge $ 15.00 Hour per your labor . This was in 62 . I just tore card up droped in file 13 .

Four years ago I went to a farm sale that had a C150 in the ad. Knew then that I had to scratch the itch. Just got my Private pilot SEL Sep '06. Bought into a 50/50 partnership C/172 in order to finish the license. Planning a trip from OH to CO. sometime in Feb. Hope to do some Mountain training there. I always had an interest in aviation. Couldn't afford it when I was younger. I'm 46 now. Figured if I did this now I would have several good years to use it. If I chose to wait, it would soon be too late.

Usually try to make a trip to Starbuck, Minnesota over Fourth of July for a 5 day campout. Have lots of friends there.

Have my own airstrip and hangar on my 28 acre farm in west central, Ohio... Gene

Technicaly not a pilot, but as a kid in public school, I flew thousands of miles in 2 Anson trainers. Two surplus Ansons were taken to the local dump, tires, engines and gasoline were removed and the rest was just left. We kids flew miles and miles in them during noontime recess. All the seats, controls and instruments were still there. Great memories. BTW there is a restored Anson in the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum near Hamilton Ontario along with the only flying Lancaster in North America.

I recall seeing that Lancaster sitting on a pylon along the side the Goderich Airport. Good news indeed that the volunters rescued and restored her before she rotted away. Those Lancasters carried a heavier load, higher and farther than most other WWII Bombers. I'm looking at a home assembled/built Ultra light 1200lb two seater and getting the private ticket. Some guys around here fly those ultra light kites .I asked a fellow how far to lead one with a 300 Winchester..... ...He didn't find it as funny as the rest of us.

Was a flight student in 1967, soloed and did cross-country in Cessna 140, (Then worth $2500). Road in a Vagabond back then that had sold for $800. The 140 cost $8.00/hr. wet, tach time and instructor was $5/hr. Had a short ride in what I think is the last true B-24 flying, three years ago.

Our farm was at the intersection of two airways and 70 miles from Offutt AFB. At the time, late 40's, Lincoln AFB had tankers and we would often see the bombers and tankers from these bases refueling overhead. Also saw the B-36 (It is larger than the 52.) in the air a lot. They have one and a B-52 at the indoor SAC museum on I-80 twenty miles west of Omaha. The bomb bay size in these is amazing. The museum has other planes and missiles also.

I frequently lunch with a 8th AF group that includes several 15th AF WWII vets. Some were POWs. One of the guys, a B-17 tail gunner survived a crash in the tail of the plane that was blown off the rest of the plane at 10,000 feet plus.

Been flying about 30 years and have a Piper Vagabond. My brother and I were at St. Charles County Airport (MO) a couple of months ago and waited patiently while the CAF maintenance crew unfolded the wings of an SBD Dauntless and fired it up for a test flight. It's quite a site to see one of those big radials cough and wake up.

I"ve managed to get a few hours (over 100) stick time over the years in C150/152/172 (single engines) C310, Aerostar 601P, and Mitsubishi MU2 Multi"s/turbine). I"ve never gone solo, although I made an attempt at a license. Most of the time I just flew with my brother.

I always look... and I"m around them all the time.
