OT - Electric wiring question in barn

Sorry for not being about tractors, but at least it is about something in a barn, and the barn is old enought to qualify. Built after the great tornado outbreak of '74.

Anyway, I want to install a switched electrical outlet.

I have the switch and an outlet. I am going to be using standard old romex as found in the barn.

Would somebody be so kind to tell me the black and white connections for the line in to the switch and the line out from the switch to the outlet.

Also, does the line in and out both get connected to the ground?

Thank-you so much for any help.

Just imagine the three wires going straight to the load; black, white, and bare ground. Now... imagine putting the switch in the middle of black one. The rest go right on thru.

The bare ground should be hooked to green screw.

there is a book that give you simple electric connections at menards or home depot or sears even at some hardware stores that would help ypu with most electrial problems that come up.

If i am correct, this is what i'm explaining: SOURCE TO SWITCH TO OUTLET.

From the SOURCE, hook your black wire to your switch. On the wire going to the OUTLET, hook its black to the switch as well. If its just a new regular single pole, it doesn't matter where you put the wires. Pigtail the whites together.

From the SWITCH to the OUTLET, take your black wire and hook it up to the GOLD color upper screw. Hook the white to the SILVER upper screw.

The identified wire is always hot and goes to the top terminal of the switch. It's wired and mounted so up is on and down is off. If running 14/2 or etc down to the switch. The white is always hot goes on the switche's top screw. The black is switched and runs back up to the light.

I forgot to mention that YES it is IMPERATIVE that you ground either the box or the switch/outlet on EVERY ONE.

Good advice for receptacles. Switches are not always quite that simple.
