Doctor of Audiology in Lexington, KY. My farming roots go back to my childhood in northeast Missouri. Four years ago the boys and I bought 100 acres of the roughest ground available in Central Kentucky. We are now hollowing out fields and building lakes and ponds for habitat and eventually to run some cattle. We own a 2004 Kubota 3830, a 48' Allis Chalmer and a 55 TO35 Massey Ferguson. I love this site and appreciate all of the help you folks have given us so far.

Sell construction & industrial supplies, fasteners, etc. in New Braunfels, TX. I'm 38, been at it for 15 yrs. Take the slack out of these old Deere tractors for mental therapy after a long week of work. Been doing this since 1998 with my dad. All restored to originals except two. Had to build a 528cid 38' A JD. Did a little growing up on a farm in western Oklahoma along the Canadian River (Roger Mills County) at grandpa's on the weekends. Ain't ever forgot it. I enjoy this site.

Currently living in Abilene Texas. My job for the last 21 years has been with the Air Force, and hope to stay with it for three more years and retire. Prior to joining the AF, I tried to go to college, worked in garages on farm machinery, industrial, and construction equipment, and helped with farming and raising livestock. Hope to go back to working on farm tractors, have a big garden, and a few calves when I get done working for the DOD.

I'm 56 years old. I'm live in West Central Illinois. I retired 4 years ago from Caterpillar Inc. I was a machine repairman there. I own a farm of 250 acres and rent somemore. I have several antique tractors. A few old John Deere's and some Allis Chalmers. I like the older AC's. Have several U's and a 1927 E 20-35. I'm slowly trying to retore them. I also have a half dozen antique cars and pickups to tinker with. I really enjoy this site. I don't think I have hardly missed a day reading it since I found it 5 or 6 years ago!

Work at a printing shop running an offset press. Print all types of business forms, guest checks, etc. Second job is caretaker at a county lake. Mowing grass, trash pickup, general upkeep. Best part of this job is filling the fish feeders during the summer. You can get real up close and personal with some large channel cats when you spill some of the feed overboard.

Live on a small farm near Ogden, NW of Des Moines, IA. Family farm is an hour away with 2500 acres of corn/soybeans. Did custom hay work until a couple years ago when I quit at Iowa State U. and went to work for a private firm based in Indianapolis, same line of work, lot more $, and get to work out of my home here in Iowa although I travel a ton (90+ flights in 2006) so was too hard to make hay. I develop face to face and electronic training courses for the ag industry (green imlement guys, red guys, blue/yellow as well as major seed companies and pork, beef, sheep associations). Best job a guy could ask for besides farming.

We sold the store in July and retired, and I went back to work in October as a pro bono consultant, researcher, and property manager for a start-up company we'd invested in.

Using SolidEdge for design/drafting, but I prefer Pro/Engineer.

I am retired but worked in a factory for almost 40 years. Started out running a punch press and after watching the clock turn very slowly all day I worked my way into maintenance, first the mechanical end and then electrical. I live in Wisconsin but like to putz around with tractors and equipment at my small acreage next door in Minnesota. My handle is Merc spelled backwards.

I'm a dentist in western NC. My farmer roots go to both my grandparents who were farmers in southern Iowa and north east Colorado. I spent a lot of time growing up on my grandad's wheat farm/angus ranch. Before college I farmed in Nebraska. I have a collection of tractors, truck, model a ford , and implements from my never-threw-anything-away grandfather to last for many years.

I'm director of IT at Panhandle State University in Goodwell, OK - out in the westernmost "strip" they call No Man's Land. We have about 900 computers on the network, so it keeps me busy.

I farmed several thousand acres of irrigation for 14 years also, before I decided (or my banker decided) I ought to stick with the computer career. I just have 80 acres of dryland to play with now.

The only difference between most work and most play is a person's attitude - so I have a great time "playing" out on the farm with my old tractors now...

Wind turbine??
Did someone say wind turbine tech??
If you dont mind, I have a question.
Oh. Topic is what people do. Good topic.
I am a nuclear operator in training in Ontario.

My question to you if you chose to accept it is,
Why are there allways wind mills not turning.
I asked a fellow and was told that for every 5 that run, one is not making money so they dont run it and save on wear and tear. What??

Dont get me wrong. I am not after to bash wind generation. I want to build my own in a couple of years but I want to know what I am getting in to.
Are they often down because they are unreliable.
Are they high maintanance??

Thanks

I retired in 1998 and don't do nothing, zitch, nada. I am now 63 and conventional wisdom is that people who retire relatively young generally don't live to a ripe old age.

I thought about a second career but would possibly end up working for some A'hole. I thought about working for myself but would definitely be working for an A'hole.

So I am going to stay retired and take my chances.

Self employeed (well Dad does still sign the checks...LOL) heavy equipment mechanic/welder/machinist. We range pretty much all over the state of NC and down into SC. Since we do all of the repair work possible in the field where the machine breaks down we never know where we're gonna be. The rest of our work is broken up at the shop with things like building an engine, doing machine shop work and repairing parts, making tooling for our portable line boring outfit, or other special stuff that's waaay too expensive to go out and buy, etc, etc. Pretty much a jack of all trades, master of none, otherwise. If I'm interested in something and don't know how to do it, I do my best to learn and know what questions to ask....

Pre or post accident..?

Pre:

Ag mech teacher and vocational director (day job)
Farm stuff, 300 acres at my place and help my dad with about twice that at his. Some custom skid steer and dozer work. Some real estate development.
A little commercial photography on the side.

Post accident:

Still at school, 5 hrs a day, 4 days a week (they let me work that restriction to keep my health insurance)
Supervise my cows and pray they dont have any problems
Had my first shoot in 4 months (those that follow me, new stuff up on my site from it)

I'm hoping to get back to what I used to do, but this year looks like a couple of neighbors will be doing most of my hay on shares.

Hi KHM,

From someone who's been there done that, you need to watch that 6mth date from your injury to file for SSA requardless if you use it or not. They will only back pay to a cerntin month and you loose the rest "if you don't file timely".

Once you get SSA then you can get medicare 2yrs latter. After 6mths then SSA will back pay to the date of injury.

If you have private pensions you need to file now as they will not back pay at all. They all pay off the date that you filed on.

Ya I too said I didn't need to do all the above as I'm healing up just fine. Well after 7mths I started the other way and got real bad from complications of the injury. It's now been many years and I will never recover.

As it was I lost 1yr of my private pensions. I lost no SSA as I had requested the form with-in the 6mth time rule but had I not kept the envolpe with the date stamp, I would have lost a year there also.

If you file and don't use it, no foul and it reverts back to as if you never filed. From what you've posted, your not even at 50% capicity yet and alot can change. Don't close any doors just yet.

Just a few thoughts to ponder.

Hi T-Bone, thats good advice, and I do appreciate it. Really hadnt thought about that yet. I did file for short term disability, and got a little over 2 months of that before I went back to limited work. If I end up off again, I get another 10 months there. After that then my regular state disability retirement should kick in. As to SSA, I used to be glad I was exempt (member of certain state retirement systems in their lingo), now Im wishing I wasnt. I've paid in some over the years but still short a few quarters.

And believe me, I know about turns for the worse, some knucklehead loosened a bolt on a stair rail and someone else decided to take it out and throw it. Had an ugly fall at work yesterday when the stair rail gave way with me. Boss is sending me to the W.C. doc tomorrow so who knows...

Thank you!! Only about half of my galleries are visable unless you register (on the www site). Not sure about DA, since they run their own show. For mine thats just registering to state that you agree to the terms of service.

Retired 3 years ago worked as a tool and die maker, manufacturing engineer, enginering manager,
plant manager and a division manager for several companies over the years. Mainly in the areas of plastic molding and factory automation. in several states IA, AL, MI, and IL. The last company I worked at was bought out by BIC and then closed ( they bought the company for it's name ). Grow up on a farm in SE NE. loved farming but could not make a good living at it. Bought 30 acres in NE MO. 5 years ago and just finished building a home on it. The wife and I run a little handyman bussiness and very busy in the community. Plus I get to play with my big boy toys.

I live near Pittsburgh, PA. Worked in auto body work for many years. finally had to get out of that, since the many hours of the paint fumes finally got to me! Retired at age 72! On New Years Eve! Almost eleven years now! Sat down for a couple weeks--decided that would make me fat and stupid, so tried making crafts! Stupid idea--made $25 for 3 weeks work! Humph! So, being that i had mechanical experience, i went into lawn mower repairs! Found some throw-aways sitting with the garbage cans on collection nights, so took them home, repaired them, sold them, and made as much from that as i made at my last job! A WW II vet, 78th. and 90th. Infantry divisions, lost my left foot from an anti-personnel mine, a lot of my teeth, the tip of my right index finger, and earned the free boat ride home! After discharge, held a lot of jobs, didn't let my injury hold me back! First job was janitor for the Borough of West view! First motorcycle, a 1936 Indian! Last job in auto body shop!
