Hi- I have a problem where the temp gauge on my MF65 will extreamly high to the point of overheating, yet if I open the hood to the tractor, within a minute the tempature will drop down and the gauge needle will drop to middle of the guage. Close the hood and 10-15 minutes later the temp is back up. I have cleaned the oil bath, even removed the Massey bird for more air. What could cause this? Suggestions for repair?

I would check(replace) the thermostat. I had this happen to me on a IH 454. Once I replace the thermostat my gauge never moved past normal.

Lots of things. Temperature sender unit (transducer), fanblades on back to front, fan belt slack or worn, water pump bearings, blocked air passages in radiator, blocked water passages in radiator. Assuming you are using tractor with hood closed and idling with hood open. Carburation, timing or air leak into the inlet manifold if it is a gas engine. Could be others.

First you need to know what the engine coolant temperature is when the guage reads high. May be no problem at all.

Sugggestions for repair? Find whether there is a problem, then what it is, then repair it.
Regards, RAB
