1-800-522-7448 for the service and operator's manuals. The Deere site has the parts list online for just about everything from the 1960's.

This tractor started being built in 1997,so a 1960's parts list probably won't help.

Ahem, I think what Buick and Deere meant was anything Deere built from 1960 until now, today, 2007.

The online Deere parts site covers all machinery from 1974 to current. Knowing Deere, repairing that front hub is going to require Deere special dealer only tools to do it properlly. Good luck finding a dealer that will let you use his special tools. Might be better off in the long run to just have the dealer do it so when it leaks in a few hours the dealer has to eat the repair.

I dunno about that particular axle as I haven't looked at the newer Deere's in some time up close. However, the last time I did look close, Deere was using ZF axles. Don't really matter as all planetary fronts are much the same anyway; it's just a matter of scaling up or down for size. Generally, the most technical tool you'll need is a dial indicator for checking the king pin play and bearing preload on the king pins, and possibly the shaft end play.
The front hubs that I've seen destruct are generally the result of a bolt dropping off in the carrier and lodging in the planetary's teeth, locking the assembly, and boom.... locked wheel and broken ring and planet gears, and sometimes the carrier. Otherwise bearing failures from lack of oil are the next concern. 90% of the repairs there are basically visual. Check for cracked, broken or worn teeth in the sun, planet, and ring gears, excessive wear on the gears or bearings, and replace as necessary. Check the input shaft bushings for wear, particulairly if the shaft seal has been leaking. Change all seals and reassemble. Do get the correct torque specs, particulairly for the ring gear reatiner bolts, as they are CRITICAL. It would be well worth one's time to review the particular procedure in the service manual. It can save a lot of greif. But I doubt there are any special tools.... at most a dial and spring gauge. HTH.

The most common mode of front drive axle failure I've seen is a Hero Driver slogging throught deep water, mud and manure above the breather vent on the axle. And they wouldn't know what the axle drain and fill plugs were if you hit the owner with them. Let alone the concept of draining out contaiminated lube, flushing and adding fresh GL-4 Marine High Pressure Lube.

Yes, I'd see that getting the differential section, but the hubs aren't vented. Those things are worked to death under loaders. For the most part, the ZF units were pretty tough, but I've seen more than enough misery from a Carraro unit on one of our tractors. It just had an air of unpredictability. It would drop a bolt head off the ring gear at just about any time, lock the planetary, break the ring for sure, and depending on how much force was behind it, would break one or 2 planets, and sometimes the carrier. Drop a grand in it like nothing, sometimes more, plus a few hours work. That particular axle had undersized bolts, and if they were under torqued would back off, and even slightly overtorqued would break off. Loctite 262 was gospel with that thing. It was just underbuilt for the tractor. However, regardless of the paint color, loaders are hard on axles. Just hard hard hard. They kill steering joints, king pins, and the entire front driveline because so much of the drive is taken through the front.
