This was 2 summers ago. We were coming home from Lincoln, and in the 'slow' lane on interstate. This jeep is making haste in the 'passing' lane, but I could see he had sparks shooting out from underneath him. I slowed down and made noise and flailed the arms about to get him to pull over. This is what the Jeep looked like in 20 seconds, after stopping. In talking to the 2 young guys, found out they had been at the river for the weekend, and, my guess is they punctured the fuel tank with sand. Of course it was dripping directly on the exhaust system. Greg

Saw a picture like that couple years ago, only it was prison van. The drive shaft lost a yoke and it smashed the fuel tank (mounting them on the inside of the frame has its own problems). The shackled prisoners burned to death before they could be released. Like they say, crime doesn't pay.

Yes, that is a gas can. It shot straight up at least 20 feet and landed there. You should have heard the oversize tires blow one at a time. Greg

I highly doubt sand did it, they might have gotton hung up on a log and creased the tank. Of course it could have been an electrical thing or a chunk of brush by the exhaust too.

Leaking gas tanks aren't that uncommon in an older jeep. I had a 1985 CJ7 back in the early 90's that I had to replace the fuel tank in. It rusted from the grunge that gets packed between the fuel tank skid plate/support and the tank bottom. Just a hairline crack... and I had fuel all over the driveway. Atleast I wasn't driving mine at the time.

My 99 wrangler has a tank mounted in similar fashion but I've never checked to see what it's made of.
