We have a 2006 Chrysler Town & Country that developed quite a whine that I thought was coming from the tranny, even though the tranny was shifting perfectly. So, back to dealer and service writer said it was a leaking rack; the power steering pump was the cause of the whine. It's under warrany and they will replace rack but she said they didn't have the part in stock it is "back ordered." This "back ordered" thing caused a flutter in my feeble mind so I asked her if this was a problem they had seen frequently with these vans or Caravans. She didn't say much and when I pressed her, she danced and skated some more and finally admitted that they had seen a few of these problems. Anyone else had any experience with this issue?

I have a 2001 Caravan . Had to have rack and pump replaced ,,was under warranty though . I have replaced few of these in my shop also . Pretty normal wear items. Other than that ,,no major problems,,, window motor , rear wiper motor . With over 170,000 on it ,I think it';s been pretty good van .

We recently bought a 97 Dodge Grand Caravan and I found a good forum over at allpar.com with a good bunch of minivan enthusiasts that have a lot of experience.

so now i'm concerned. We had a 02 Dodge stratus. we bought it new and 4K after the 36K warranty ran out, I noticed a slight clunk in the front end when you turned it hard, and hit a dip like going in a driveway. She took it to the dealer, and they wouldn't let her leave w/ it. The ends of the rack and pinion were messed up somehow, and they ended up replacing the entire unit because the original factory unit was made w/ non-replacable ends. That cost me about $1000. That was only 6000 miles after they had the engine apart replacing the head that had a stripped spark plug hole due to over tightening at the factory.

Just last fall, I thought we'd get out from under it before something else went wrong, and traded it for an 05 T&C that you're telling me has similar issues...great...

It's all a direct result of those "made in china" parts. I don't think you can buy a new vehicle of any brand today that will not have some quality or safety issues. Hopefully those issues will show up as a recall, or at least before the warranty expires, but quite often those issues don't expose themselves until just after the warranty runs out. It's too bad the mfgrs. won't still build them with pride like they used to do back in the '50s and '60s.
