I was reading in today's paper, someone in Wilcox Arizona is being charged with steeling some of his neighbor's cattle. I was woundering if this is a problem in other parts. When my brother was raising cattle a few years back he has had cattle shot, and drug out of the field to the road, but only happened a couple times, that he knew about. Years ago this was a good way to get hung. Stan

A couple of years ago 2 guys from Arkansa I think had enough balls to steel em right out of the sale barn pens at night...say severl days after the sale. No body was there because nobody had made arangements to pick anything up. 2 people saw trucks pulling out of there. Not unusall to see though. They did this to several barns around. Finally through brands, they tracked em down to a feedlot they owned in Arkansa. Id highly recomend if you dont live in an area where you need a hot brand...do it anyway. We come up short out of the pastures some times to, but at least if there is a mark and you can prove you use that mark you at least have a fighting chance.

Of course you can do it on paper. We had a feedlot guy that would go out and buy cattle for farmers. Hed buy the cattle for the farmer, do the feeding for him, and he would provide the corn. A way to soposedly get more out of your corn. Anyhow a tornado came through and hit the feedlot head on. People came to check on the cattle. He was short about 3000hd. He was selling 2 or 3 people the same group of feeders and then using the money to operate with!

Needless to say both of these people went to the pen for a while. Then of course you have the ocasional cult deal where they kill the cow to suck the blood out and take the liver and kindneys or something and leave the rest for you to clean up. While your P.O.ed about loosing a cow you have that to handle...thank god Ive never had that either.

Then we h

Just had what sounds like an old-fashioned shootout, with two shot dead and two others reportedly banged up (but not shot) up in NE part of state (OR) (lots of eastern OR cattle country). No one"s talking very much, incl the sheriff. Article reported rumors of rustling, although sheriff supposedly said rustling wasn"t involved in this case; article said two went to retrieve cows from other two. Curious item: two shot, one on each side, reportedly shot with same rifle; must"ve struggled over rifle.

It isn't unusal for someone to lose a calf or a colt/filly come up missing here in WV . My farm is 45 miles from where I live . One of my neigbor's on farm lost a Calf last year & another lost a colt about two years ago both were reg stock . the State Police make a report & that is the last you hear about it "ever" .

It's real here as well, though the smaller livestock is more commonly rustled, goats in particular.

Cops generally refuse to respond, local auction houses have no qualms about selling stolen livestock.

It's still a big problem and todays rangers or lawmen have to be real computer savy to catch the thieves in big feed yards rustling them on paper too. One magazine here and newspaper recently did a article on the job of modern day rangers and what they do catching cattle rustlers and they all have huge area to cover and work with local sheriffs also.

been seeing a lot of that in local papers. 5 goats shot next county, 5 horses, then 5 sheep this county; last fall 41 cows in one herd.

Stan,

I had a 400# calf shot at night. Also had some one shooting at my cattle from a county road in broad daylight. When they saw me they left the area. Never had any stolen.
