Whew!

Finally got the hydraulic box all triple insulated and put back together. Insulated and strapped the rear partition to the tractor and now I cannot do another blessed thing until the weather breaks and I get that cab done.

Guess I'm gonna have to do like you big dogs and build a machine shed to work in during the winter. :>(

Lookin' good, Allan. You don't want to put up a shop. You'd end up workin' yourself to death in it!

Hey Allen, if you end up building a shop plan out very careful where your going to put it. Would hate for you cut down your only tree to put up a shop.

Allen, What type of insulation did you use? I need to do some work on my cab, and put new insulation on the fuel tank. I would think there would be some auto insulation that would work, but I didnt look into it. Any tips?

I'm using the 1" thick sound deadening stuff like comes on 'em when new.

Got it from the local implement dealer and bought it by the yard. Think it was something like $37 a yard?

For the incidentials like around the fuel tank, under the floor and behind the gauges, I just used 2" thick foam packing material.

For the cab, I'm using a precut and formed kit from Fehr company, which is gonna end up being way cheaper than the tractor part. Seems to me it was something like $170.

I know I'm probably going overboard on the deadening end of it, but these damned Internationals have got to be the loudest machines ever conceived by mankind. Even a open station tractor will ruin your hearing in just a short order unless ya wear the ear protectors.

I'm hoping to get it down to a level somewhat like my Powerstroke. That I could live with. Still has a "diesel" sound, but it doesn't draw blood. :>)

That 986 we rent on occasion always seemed fairly quiet, but maybe that was just an improvement over the 66 series though.

You wanna talk about loud? Our 1855 Ollie is LOUD, and it's an open station! I can't stand running that one without any ear plugs in, even just to move it a few feet. Of course, now it's even louder that I added a ROPS canopy on it to deflect all the noise back down at me!! I personally couldn't tell the difference betwen the straight pipe we had on it for a little while and the muffler.

The pipe was a temporary fix when the manifold broke off inside the muffler at the dealer getting a clutch. Nothing they did wrong, and it would have cost a fortune for them to fix it, so I told 'em to just send 'er back as is, I'll fix the manifold. We had to do some chiseling in the mean time so I found some 3" sch. 40 pipe my dad brought home, and it fit as good as it got over what was left. Chiseled about 30-35 acres like that.

I made an adapter at work out of a peice of scrap. I bored it out to fit over what was left of the manifold, then bored the rest out and turned the OD so the whole thing had about an 1/8" of side wall. I started up the 18, drove it up to the shop and left it run while I welded it on. That was for several reasons, pre and post heat, as well as keep the engine bearings lubricated so I didn't some how arc across the crank while welding, seeing as how I was basically welding right on the engine. It also kept any crap out of the turbo.

It would probably be impossible to get the turbo and manifold elbow separated judging by how rusted the elbow was to the muffler, so if the turbo ever goes, so does the elbow.....

Now the muffler is back on, but I really can't tell.....

I'm glad to hear you say that... I've spent a lot of hours on JD's, Case's, Versatile, Steiger, etc... But that 1466 I had for a while was louder than any of them... I liked the old tractor except for it sounding like you were riding a 747 engine...

If you ever build a shop you will wonder why it took you so long to do it. It is nice.
