I heard the engineers at work today talking about converting British thermal units into foot pounds. Where would you usethis method and how would you ever be able to find the equation?

Oh my, how quaint! The rest of the whole wide world uses Watts and Joules. SOOOOO O much easier. Do still have some old school books from the 50s which used these old fashioned Imperial units, but they are so out of date with the rest of the world which uses S.I. units. SI units are all easily comparable and simply work on multipliers of 10.

Quaint, indeed. I have books (reprints) from the 1850's up to now. You never hear the really cool terms like milli-micron anymore. And it's even a metric measurement.

I have one book (reprint) from the the 1500's about craftmanship and workshop methods. And another book (reprint) same topic from the 1100's translated from the original scrolls written in latin. It's hard to read that old english.

If you haven't seen it you ought to check out Lindsay Books website. I have a lot of books from them.

Yeah, milli micron! Back to the days in the seventies when colorimetric analysis was the bee"s knees in lab analysis! Haven"t been near one of those for years - its all XRF, XRD MSR, and probably the next two generations on, these days. Angstrom units ring a bell as well.

Ah yes. I remember Angstroms. I remember in high school trying to figure out how many cubic angstroms were in a cubic parsec. Computers back then couldn't count that high. Still don't know if they could accurately even today.

If you had a steam boiler rated in BTU's and you wanted to know how much work it would output in foot-pounds you would need to know how to do the conversion. 550 ft-lbs/sec = 1 HP = 2545 BTU/hour. Or you could use it to find the efficiency of the boiler. Basic physics/thermodynamics stuff mostly.

1980000 ft-lbs/hour = 2545 BTU/hour = 1 HP.
