Could my Allis have spun a bearing?

I started my 185 Allis diesel a few weeks ago and heard a growling sound. Kinda sounded like a growly starter drive that didn't disengage. I shut the tractor off and restarted. It did it a little bit and then the sound quit. I've been using the tractor since running hard on the grinder/mixer and everything sounds fine. After I shut the tractor down today I noticed a drizzle of engine oil running out of the hole in the bottom of the bellhousing. Appears to be a rear main seal leak. My "worse case scenario" outlook on life has gotten me wondering if I have a spun rear main and now the seal is going to hell because of it. I did an in-frame overhaul about 1000 hours ago and replaced the rear main then so I am somewhat surpised that it is failing now. What do you guys think- just a coincidence?

Thanks for the ideas guys. The tractor seems to sound fine. It unnerved me yesterday when I saw the drizzle of oil coming out of the bellhousing. I did install a "speedy sleave" when I put the seal in so stuff should have been good to go there. Could be tranny fluid mixed with clutch dust. Didn't think of that. Could even be leakage from the power divider clutch. I'll check into that. I think the only port that I can take off won't show too much in the clutch area. If I remember correctly the port is further back to disconnect lines going to the power divider clutch necessary for a split. Whatever the situation is it sounds like the 'ol girl is gonna have to come apart for a look-see.
Thanks everyone.

Don't think so.

A spun bearing "usually" will set up a "squeal" noise which will later develop into a "knock" and it will never "go away".

Think you have a bearing problem further back in the clutch/tranny area or like you say, possibly a starter issue.

Hope you find it,

Allan

When it spins a bearing blocking a oil galley the oil pressure will go way up then may come back down and or hear more noise when bearing spins more and get things hot too. Isn't there a inspection cover you can pull off to see inside there by clutch?

Just wondering, did you replace the wear sleeve along with the seal? If not, that would explain why it is leaking. If you spun a bearing, your oil pressure would probably drop and it would keep making noise. I would split it and check out whats going on iside there. It could be the throwout bearing or something with the clutch. That would be the place and you could also check the crank for any movement while in there. I would definatively replace the wear sleeve AND the seal. Also, it may be the input shaft seal. Tranny oil when exposed to clutch dust will turn black and look just like motor oil. Good luck

I wouldn't think if you spun a main if would still sound fine after running it hard. maybe a throw-out bearing. maybe bearing getting hot and leaking what grease is left in it???
