It looks like it's finally time to start shopping for a tractor. I've got some specific needs for it, and I'm looking for suggestions on which model(s) to shop for. Here's what I need it to do:
1) I'm working with planting beds that are 60" wide by 200' long, so it'll need a wide front end, and the wheels will need to be about 72" apart to give me clearance on each side.
2) I need it to pull some specific tools - a 60" wide rototiller, a 6-8' wide grain drill, a manure spreader, and various wagons. The rototiller would probably be the heaviest load.
3) I'd like it to be diesel if possible.
4) I'd like it to have, or accept, a bucket on the front end and a backhoe and fence auger on the back. Those are wants, not needs.

I'm figuring about 35-40hp would be sufficient, so something in that range. Also looking for something with easy access to replacement parts. Any suggestions on which tractor models fit all those requirements? Thanks all. I've really learned a lot on this site and hopefully soon it'll all pay off.

Ford New Holland 3010S- @42 pto. I have owned one for 10 years. Works well with loader on it, and front axle is adjustable. The ears have a fairly good range of adjustment, but some older row crop tractors have wider range of adjustment. The 3010s is a utility line of tractor. Also, the 30 series arent bad-3930-4030 Ford/NH.

John deere 2150 or 2155 or 2040 or 2240 or 2030 or 1530 or 1520 or 1020. The tractors I have listed are from newest to oldest. Parts are READILY available, in fact, more available than IH and Ford combined. I have a 2155 and it has a loader on it. I paid 10,000 for it with 5000 hours. Loaders readily available for the above models. The above models are 40-45 hp. All have 3 point hitch. Some can have swept back axles which are really well for what you want to do, and turn shorter. All can be gotten in diesels. Expect to pay around $7,000-10,000 for any one of these models in good condition. The lower the hours, the better they are and more expensive. JD loaders run $2,000-3,000 for the above. All have good hydraulics and power steering and live/independent pto. Most have lower speeds for tillers. Backhoes could be gotten from other aftermarket dealers, no big deal.

To clarify - the planting beds are 60" wide, with a 2.5' wide grassy walkway between. The rototiller I plan to get is about 60" wide across the blades, but its wheelbase is about 75" so the wheels will ride on the walkways outside each bed.

As for tractor make and color, I don't currently have any preferences.

If you want to straddle 72" and you have a 60" roto tiller that ain't gonna work.

Unless you reset the wheel tread when you go from job to the other.

You will not take out your wheel tracks.

But maybe you don't need to if your gonna leave space between your tilled areas.

Just some thoughts, Gary

Sounds like he is making seperate 60" beds and needs the tractor wheels to straddle them. There will many different tractors to meet your needs. Are you partial to any particular make(color)?? How much are you wanting to spend?? RW

I was hoping to spend less than $4,000 on this particular tractor, and I am perfectly willing to buy an older tractor. I don't need parade ready, just something that is mechanically sound. I was thinking of the Allis Chalmers WD45 diesel, and saw one for sale around here awhile ago for about $2500 but didn't get after it soon enough. Someone else bought it. Serves me right - you snooze, you lose. But I wasn't quite ready yet. I want to make sure I recognize any more deals like that, before the next guy jumps on it first.
