Hi all,
I have a'58 Allis D14. Manual calls for 20-weight oil for the power steering, final drives (at rear wheels), and the power director clutch. What do you all think of substituting 30-weight in the final drives and power director clutch and modern power steering fluid instead of the 20-weight (which I can not find anyway)??
Thanks for any advice.

You can use the heavier oil in the drives, but I would use a multi wt. 15-40 there. It would provide the lubrication needed and be more friendly in cold weather. In the clutch, I would use the recommended oil. Many suppliers can provide that wt. try a local distributor rather than small retailers. Powersteering fluid is not at all like mineral oil. It is high parafin content, and is not compatible with the friction requirements of a clutch. JimN

I think I'd run more of a hydraulic/transmission oil like IH's HyTran or MF's Perma-Tran III Could be used in all 3(Deere has one too, as well as other oild companies etc...

I don't think the modern powersteering fluid for cars would work as well in an older tractor that was designed to use a slightly heavier engine oil. I'd stick with a hydraulic oil in the PS for sure.

That said, I've never spent more than 2 hours driving an allis much less maintaining one so there could be some arguements there as per my recommendations.
