Hey every one need some help! I have a 1995 Dodge ram 1500 4x4. The front axle I have replaced the front vacuum shifter motor. The lines connecting to the shifter motor have good vacuum they will stick to your finger. When the motor is off the axle you can see it shift and the light comes on indicating 4wd. The transfer case locks in 4hi and 4lo when the truck is up on jack stands the front wheels locked when placing it in 4 wheel. The front axle is good on the inside even when the truck is on the ground you can take one finger and slide the gear into place with no resistance at all. I have tried switching the lines(vacuum)and when going down the road the light for 4wd will come on and go off like when going down a hill before switching THE LINES. Would like to have it fixed for snow don"t want to get trapped at work, home would be fine but not work. Would have a local mech. look at it but it"s hard to find one you can trust or afford around here have had several bad dealings not with this truck but others. I was thinking about getting the posi-lok to fix this but would like to keep it stock and was worried if they work with the indicating light. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As the others have stated below, it sounds like you have a vaccum problem. You may be lossing engine vacuum due to the leaking intake manifold gasket. I had a similar problem. We chased down all the line leaks and reinstalled the intake manifold with a new gasket and all works well now.

your slide coupler is bad and your right axle shaft could also be bad [short shaft] have a 1990 and 1996 had to replace both . trust me thats whats wrong. bet under load you get a clunk in the front end when the light goes on and off

on my 1990 i put lockout hubs on it and just locked the slide coupler over to the right with the fork on the back side of the slid coupler but on the 96 you can't put lockout hubs on it so i fixed it with a new coupler and shaft was not that costly to do both my trucks have over 200,000 miles and plow snow all the time. and what you said about off roading sounds like your truck was used a lot in 4x4. under full vac. it will push the motor back and then snap in again and you will get a clunk

It doesnt have a clunk when the light comes on or goes off but there is a noise that sounds like a u joint going out but i think the u joint on the driver side wheel that u joint is going out. It has 170,000 miles on it been a good truck can't complain. But the slider will slide even when it is on the ground real easy no problem at all or resistance thanks Reynolds

the splines get wore and they will not stay in the lock position the coupler is a little softer then the axle but if you have a u joint out then the needle bearing in the outer hub is more the likely shot also and the rubber compresion seal is shot also the hole thing comes in a rebuild kit from auto zone same as older chevy and gmc trucks. but i'll still bet it's the couple and axle shaft. only trucks i ever owend are dodge. you have dana front ends in them DON'T go to dodge for parts go the auto zone or napa

sounds like the transfer case if it is locking up the frontend when off the ground the lights work off a switch on the top of the transfer case pull the drain plug on the transfer case and look at what comes out refill with dextron three transmission fluid the drain plug is a 30mm socket or a 10mm allen; with the front of the truck off the ground take the front of the drive shaft loose with a 3/8 socket and engauge the four wheel drive and try to turn the frontend if it turns the wheel with no problems hook the shaft back up and jack up the rear wirh all four wheels off the ground and the four wheel drive engauged try to turn the shafts by hand

Are you sure its not losing and regaining vacuum?

Thats what it sounds like to me.

Mine quit and it ended up being a hole in the vacuum line by the drive shaft.

Just a thought, Gary

when we put our fingers on the lines we let it run and revved the engine up but we could not tell any difference but i will check to make sure. When i fist got the truck the guy used it for 4wheelen and he had the lines disconnected so when i hooked them up the front wheels was engaged all the time then i had a mechanic do a tune up, said he found a line off and it never has worked again even after a new shifter motor.

thanks

Tuneup guys can find the vacuum dump line under the hood thats supposed to vent vacuum and plug it or connect it to vacuum. That will cause the 4 wheel to not work correctly. Marlowe and Gary are both correct also. Would be a easy fix for a true dodge or 4 wheel mechanic. You could run a vacuum line direct to the apply side after the check valve as a shade tree repair cap the other port to keep clean. Chysler master tech ,Ase Master Tech 25 years
