Where can I send a Delco generator to be rebuilt? Or, where can I obtain a rebuilt armature and field coils for a 6-volt delco generator? Thanks.

Mine was chewed up that bad. Took it to a starter alternator shop about 60 miles away, cost $ 145.00 to get it fixed. Could have bought a reman cheaper. Wish I had just converted it to alternator and went to 12 volt system instead.

Some shops just charge too much.Neighbor had an old ford starter that was giving trouble.Called a big shop, got a 100.00 quote.I put new brushes in it and gave the commutator a light turning, the bushings and drive were ok.Charged him 10.00.Was in an electric motor shop. Labor rate was 70.00 per hour. Was hunting for a magneto cap, a shop in Maine gets 93.00 per hour labor for mag work.Tried to get a brush rigging for a 96 ford starter. shop said 40.00.Got one for 16.50 including priority mail.

If it reallyyyyy y? needs BOTH a new armature plus field coils, it may be wiser to go ahead n buy a whole new rebuilt unit n be done with it. Often its only a set of brushes n maybe a bushing n have the commutator turned is about all they usually require. However if the bushings were so shot the armature was dragging it may be shot and they arent cheap. If the armature isnt shorted to ground and passes the smell test it might be fine n all you need is brushes, maybe a bushing???

John T: Thanks for the suggestion. Buying a rebuilt to start with may be the best route to take. Thanks

Check your yellow pages for local alternator or starter electrical rebuilders or battery shops or try Kenneth at Classic here in TX.
