Cowman says he saw this old tractor in North Platte, NE at a truck stop.

That makes it official; he's now in the "other" Nebraska. Betcha he hits Iowa before 6pm if the roads allow. :>)

I am going to go on the record here by saying that is the absolute worst job of tying one down I have ever seen, and with the tractor riding way up on the front of the trailer, I'm thinking he is having one of the worst rides of his life. If the DOT boys spot him, he will be shut down.

Rusty I'm gonna ask why is it tied down so wrong?

There are 2 chains and binders going back. and there 2 chains and binders going forward.

I'm trying to figure out why it makes a difference where they are hooked to the tractor.

As long as the part they are hooked to is strong enough.

Also you don't see the truck but the springs on the truck are not even close to the overloads.

You got to have some weight on the truck.

Not being a smart a$$ just trying to learn here.

Those chains look way too small, what size are they? That method of tying down will work to keep the tractor from moving, but I don't think it will keep the tractor on the trailer during an accident. Next time you see a big rig hauling tractors, take a look at how the tractors are chained down, I think you will understand what I am talking about. And yes, you do need some weight on the truck, but with a gooseneck trailer, there is no way that you will not put some weight on the truck. I learned the hard way also, when hauling tractors, the rear axle of the tractor should be centered between the 2 axles of the trailer. This will result in the load being much more balanced, which will give a much smoother ride, and is much easier on the truck, trailer, and the driver.

For what it's worth, I also have experience as an over the road trucker.

Yes those chains do look small but they are 3/8.

The trailer and chains are borrowed from a machinery dealer and those chains meet dot specs.

Picture is not giving the chains justice.

I have seen tractors tied in this fashion when more than one are stack end to end on a trailer wth no room between them for the angle chains.

And yes it may be to far forward on the trailer.

The tag on the side on the trailer says to put 16% on the load on the truck. So that would be about 2000 lbs. Without a scale to load that is tough to guess.

He is probably about right.

We're learning, Gary

Don't know about the DOT, but that youngster has to be pourin' the coals to 'er, from what I figure.

He was setting out here in front of my place 24 just hours ago.

Oh Yeah,

Gary's gonna have to plug 'er in for a spell before he can even unload. Darned thing is clear full of straight #2 oil. :>)

We're both wonderin' if this young man will keep right on a rollin' and end up at Gary's yard before midnight. Kinda like watchin' for Santa Clause. :>)

Roads should be good. Clouds cleared off about 2:30 here earlier to the west.

Might roll it off the trailer dead and right into the heated shop.

But it will set all nite.Temps are dropping now about 15. Been above 20 all day.

Gary,

I yanked the keys on the old sister.

Told your man to put 'em in his pocket so they wouldn't jiggle loose and drop off somewhere along the line between here and there.

Looks like you taped over the exhaust and intake also.

Good Man Allan, Turbo would have been smoked otherwise. Especially at the speed that driver must be going!!

Rick you can keep that 1 degree stuff.

I think we are headed to -4 tonite ourselves.

I got meetings all week till Friday. So won't get much done on it this week.

Got just about enough time tomorrow to go 10 miles to get the trailer with tractor and bring it home.

Got to get that thing in the shop.

It's got to be froze to death after that 750 mile ride.

Gary
