I have lived every collectors dream in the last week. I went to do some bushogging for some folks the next county over. They bought a place at auction last October and with the warm weather wanted to get a jump on some clean up. I was enjoying a beautiful TN day(unseasonalbly warm day) and as I was taking my Oliver 1650 over the back pasture I kept noticing an old barn in the trees. I stopped and got off and made my way through the trees to the barn. It had part of the roof missing and was sagging on one end. As I went in I could not believe my eyes. There sat a Oliver 99 GM. It was all there but had rough sheet metal. I ran out and finished my work them called the folks who owned the place. I told them about the tractor and that I wanted to buy it. Since they lived out of state, they hadn't had time to really check all the older building on the property since it was bought as is. I offered 300 and they TOOK IT. Apparently they had no idea of its worth. Did I take advantage of them, or just hit the mother load? Never pass up an old barn I guess?!?!?!? I am going back next weekend to look through a couple of other sheds just in case!

You answered your own question."They had no idea of its worth" So they trusted you to give them an honest offer. You know and anyone else knows that messes with Olivers that tractor is worth far more than the figure you gave them. Now it would be different if they
set a price then its take it or leave it for that price.

I would go get the tractor soon as you can, and never look back. More than likely the new owners would have seen it as more junk to remove. Since you didn't know the condition, you were taking a chance. I bought a JD industrial model 401 b, it is almost the same tractor as the JD 2440 farm tractor. I paid 500.00 for it which I thought was a good deal. Everything in the engine was shot including the block when I opened it up. I was able to salvage the block at a price of 650.00, plus the price for everything else needed for a rebuild. I would not have bought the thing had I known what I know now. Stan

Aloha, If it was worth a lot more and they sold it to you without doing any type of research or knowing the actual worth, then you came out ahead. I would assume that sometime in the future they will hear something about what they lost out on and will either regret the decision they made or will say, "oh well, we"ll know better the next time" or they could say, "oh well, our loss his gain", "oh well, what would we do with that junk", etc. Bottom line,at least there is one happy guy!

$300 is a drop in the bucket for what a Super 99 GM is worth in any condition. Even if it was in really bad shape you could part it out for 10 times your money. If it's in fair condition it worth more than 30 times what you paid for it. It's interesting that there seems to be two camps here. Those that feel paying so little is unethical and just short of stealing it and those that feel it's fair because the seller had the opportunity to turn down the offer down. We all like a good deal but at what point does is it unethical? Personally I would feel guilty but I unless I informed the seller it worth more. If the seller knew it was worth more and excepted my offer of $300 it might be OK.

Let's just say for the sake of arguement , that he only had $300 to blow on an unknown "barn tractor" and so that's what he offered? They took it! End of story. Now I'll agree , if he told them it was only worth $300 , then maybe there would be a case for greediness , maybe. What if they told him $8000? Does that give HIM the right to call THEM greedy? Just because he couldn't afford it? Is there anybody on here that have NEVER offered less than asking price for a car, truck, tractor or anything for that matter? I see no difference here accept that at least he didn't try to bargain them down. From what I read they were all adults involved , no guns held , no arms twisted and no deception by anyone. He offered $300 , he didn't tell them that was all it was worth , they accepted! Done-Deal! For the nay-sayers...next time you go to buy a car , dealer or otherwise , you best pay the asking price or shame on you.

You bought it without knowing its actual condition. They sold it without knowing it's actual condition. A deal was reached. They could have researched it, perhaps they did. I doubt they had any interest in vintage iron. There is nothing to lose sleep over here.

BTW, Auction pricing of a 1951 Oliver 99 Not running in Poor condition In Iowa was $300, two more in Good codition sold for $1500 in IL, while a third in IL must have been a peach. It sold for $7K.

Sounds to me like you were right on the money.

Let's go Mountaineers,

Aaron

Last summer I was doing some work for neighbor brush hogging 5 acres and in the middle of the field under a large oak tree i found this. I gave him $25 for it. He was happy and I'm even happier.

But did you check it out completely ? Does it have a hole in the block , stuck engine , trashed tranny , bent axles , or something else major that caused it to end up in the barn in the first place ? Everthings fixable I guess so if it is trashed $300 is fair . If you go in there and add some fuel and a battery and drive it home shame on you ! ...Randy

Great find! You're OK on this transaction so don't lose any sleep over it. If you hadn't found it, it would still be sitting there when the ice age arrives.

What did you tell them? Did you say it was only worth $300? Did you say you did not know the value? What were your words?
What is your association/relationship with these people? Sooner or later, someone may tell them about the tractor, and your relationship will be lost and their bad feelings toward you may make your purchase not so good.
Tom

I guess it would depend on how you presented your case about finding the 99 and the condition of it to the owners.

Do you plan on doing more work for them in the future ?

If they find out it was worth a lot more, they may feel that you did take advantage of them, being so far away.

If they don't care, than you made a good deal.

What a find!!!!, yep, most of the time them old broken down buildings have nothing or just a little bit of pure junk in them, but occasionally you will find some treasures in them. I personally know of where there is an old JD 50 in pretty good shape and all there, sitting in a shed at an old abandoned house that hasn't been lived in for atleast a decade now. Along with that JD 50 is a whole pile of old equipment that was used for a vegetable operation and it's all pretty nice. Thats got to be one of the best old tractor finding stories I have heard, although you practically stole it for $300, but then, that tractor wasn't even anything the current owners had and I am amazed it didn't get yanked out and sold before the real estate was sold. Like someone else said, you made an offer and they took it without doing any research as to what its value was.

They had every right to turn down your offer until they could come and see for themselves or research the subject. They chose not to do either. They accepted your offer. What's to feel guilty about?

That's great. Let us know what else you find. Prowling around abandoned farm steads (with permission) is one of my favorite things.

I guess the fact that I have lived within 40 miles of this place all my life is what really gets me. Happy hunting!
