I have been working on an old 930 Case diesel tractor, I told myself if I got it running so I could check out the functions of the tractor I would go ahead and spend the money to rebuild the motor, well I got the old sow running and it ran out good, this tractor has set for 20 plus years that I know of, but the old motor did not sound that bad, and it ran clean for a diesel, I have been wondering about adding slick 50 or Marvels to the oil and running it for short periods of time, maybe 15 minutes or so and see if the motor would come into its own, the old girl has good oil pressure so that tells me the bearings must be fair, and it started off the starter so compression must be decent, ok. what do you guys think?

I had a nissan 6 cyl diesel ebgine in my sailboat that had about15,000 hours on it and it ussed a quart of oil every 10 hours or so so oneday I got the smart idea to Slick 50 it. It cleaned the engine out so good it started to burn a quart every two hours. Took me many hour and three years to get the oil consumption back to 1 in 10. MMO would be better if ussed sparingly

My self I would just change the oil and run it. If it started up then there can't be much wrong with it and most of the stuff you add to the oil or fuel is just a waste of good money other then for the company that makes the stuff.

Additives to Old Engines Aero Kroil Re: Engine adi in reply to Animal, 01-12-2007 10:40:37
For starters it needs a clean out!
This will do it Aero Kroil yes the penetrating oil stuff. To start use 6 oz in the crankcase 6oz per 5 gallon of fuel. This cleans and lubes everything use it every oil change for about 250 hrs and first 100 gal of fuel. After that cut back to 1/2. For oil use Power Punch or Wynns it seems to be the same stuff. I use Power P cause I can get it in gallon bottles. Areo Kroil is only available on the web from Kano Labs. This stuff has been around since about 1935. Get a Gallon can Try it deal free ship just ask them, it isnt advertised. It is also very good for what ails most anything in the shop. ;))

This Kroil is very good for stuck rings!!

as a matter of fact I keep kroil around my shop too, This old gal holds 14 qts. of oil so would you still use six ounces? Is that other you mentioned motor oils, is it straight viscosity or multi?, or is it like the friction proofing?

I usually figure 6oz per 2gal cap. But the amount is not critical. What is, that a certain level be maintained.
Kroil is volital and evaporates over time and heat. So every so often take some oil off the dip stick rub it between your fingers and smell it, you should be able to detect that the Kroil is still there. As you know Kroil has a very distinct odor. If not detected add 1 or 2 oz. In this mix for an old engine I would include an equal amount of Dextron ATF. Both these oils act as wetting agents (detergents) for your oil, the ATF is not volital and does not evaporate. Dex is very high temp and hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water . As some others stated any good ASME, proper grade, rated oil should be enough, but that is for ordinary circumstances in Ideal conditions. Having set for 20 years is neither ideal or ordinary. Oils harden over time. The real condition of the engine is unknown. Now Power Punch resembles STP but make no mistake, appearance is where the similarities stop. Wynn's Fiction proofing is more like PP. But I use PP as Iam quite familiar with this product it is available at NAPA stores here, follow the label directions as to the ratios of application. These are additives I always use as a cocktail mix in all my old engines. I also add this mix to gear boxes. It seems to work as I have little trouble with any of them. Kroil also aids with Hydraulic systems, at a ratio of 1 to 50. Keep the fuel upped on Kroil to lube up the inject pump. Reduce amounts as use goes on.

I view most of those additives as being of no benefit and possibly harmful.
I would just use good oil in it and change it often for a while.

Those additives are often called "Mouse Milk".
