I'm starting to look for a new vehicle and newer 4dr Jeeps are looking pretty good. I just got a brochure yesterday but the dealership did'nt have a 4dr 4x4 in stock to look at. I like the looks and the dealer gave me a ballpark of 25k with the hardtop. I want something the wife and 2 kids will fit in with a little luggage, it looks ok there. How's the reliability of these. What kind of milage do you get? Are they still built here? I got 4 vehicles with about 600k between them so I want something newer to rotate into the mix. I'm getting rid of the '92 tempo even though it still gets 28-30 mpg, needs a clutch and a paint job but otherwise is a good car. I have 2 Windstar vans, both '00, so we're selling the one with the higher mileage. I gonna keep the Dodge 2500 diesel, ain't no way I wanna spend that much again.

My 2001 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L inline 6 had to be short-blocked at 48,000 miles. Bearings eaten away by an internal anti-freeze leak. 4000-miles later, it ate the camshaft and camshaft position sensor, leaving me sitting on the side of the road. Now I can't keep coolant in it, and Chrysler can't find the problem.

No more (modern) Jeeps for me. Chrysler did cover the repairs under the extended warranty. But I had my ducks in a row; photo of the oil pressure at zero, oil analysis (the lab said,"Don't drive this engine until it's been checked.")

YMMV. Worst vehicle I've ever owned.

The most capable off road vehicle is a 2007 4 door Rubicon. Nothing comes close period. No debate. Now you said wife and kids. Do you want an off road toy or a nice daily grocery getter?
The milage will be rude and they are underpowed for a daily driver. They have solid front and rear axels and it will ride and drive like it.
Load up the wife and kids and see how anemic it is at highway speed. Around town and in the woods you will like it. The Rubicon package is the only way to go if you are thinking about buying one. It has 4:10 gears and you will need them with the small V6 with the load you will carry. The resale is high with that package plus you get a stronger transfer case with granny gears. A cool electronic sway bar disconect, electronic locking differentials and 3/4 ton Dana 44 axels with cromoly axel shafts.
It is built like a tank and performs offroad and on road like one. If its not worth the money to you now it will be as soon as you go off road and meet fellow jeepers. The new Toyota FJ cruser drives like a dream and can fly down the highway but you will break it if you take it off road. I love the new Jeep but if you are not a Jeeper I just want you to know what you are getting into.

Consumer Reports wasn't impressed and the Jeep didn't get a very good ranking
