I hear there is a one year draft coming up, in 2009.. just wondering what you guys think the chances are that it will go though.. my odds are looking pretty good to get drafted, becouse it seems they are starting with guys 20 years old, and thats my lucky number for that year.. I plan on joining this year anyhow, but a few of my friends who ain't the "gun type" are kinda worried.. what ya' think? Tim Shultz

Tim

I retired from the Air Force after twenty years. My son was in the Army for 4 years with one tour in Iraq. I am here to tell you if you have to go join the Air Force. You will be behind the lines. We sned our officers out to fight while we stay behind and load the armor and fix the broken aircraft. We may not do the grunt work that hte Marine and Army do but arleast we are on solid ground and don't have to share our bed.

Tim: I am a U.S.M.C. Veteran [1955-1963] and there is near never a day goes by at some point that something will cause me to think back on my Military experience. It is a proud period of my life. Of course I was a "Volunteer" fresh out of High School looking at more endless days cleaning up after the backside of some Guernsey Cow on an every day of the week basis so my volunteering was a win -win situation to me. Needless to say the first few months of training made me positive I had made a mistake but later on in hind sight,I would not have changed a single event of my Life in the "U.S.Marine Corps". If I had been on a Drafted Basis I am not so sure that my Memories would be so vivid and satisfying. The other Posts of Technology Requirements of modern day Soldiers are all true I am sure, but you must like what you are doing to have a life that has some meaning and Volunteerism is a much better approach to likeing Military Service than being Drafted. My opinion ,John , "SEMPER FI"

I really don't think there will be that much chance of it happening. Glad to hear you're thinking of joining up. I will say no matter what branch or job your going into, take the time to make sure your contract is all in order. Of course, things can change but make sure the recruiter answers all your questions and puts the details in writing, that's what he's there for. BTW, what branch/job are you looking at?

Tim, everything I"ve ever read about the modern military makes me think that those generals who run it don"t want anything to do with draftees. In a military that is high-tech and needs motivated individuals, you"ll be hard-pressed to find less motivated people than those who are there when they don"t want to be. For this and several other reasons I doubt we will see a draft until/unless there is a major crisis. I was in the Air Force "85-"90 and I benefited greatly from the experience. Just remember to sign up for a career field that you want, and one that can earn you a salary when you get out. Get the training and learn all you can. It"s a great place to get some valuable life experience. Tim

Tim If you are not married I would consider joining the Navy. In 64 I was draft material, so I joined up. You will never get a chance for a adventure like that in civilian life. If you do try and get something to do with airplanes. the bigger the better. Stan US Navy 64-68

I think what you are refering to is a possible test of the draft system by selective service about 2009.

Well thanks in advance. the military is an excellent place to get training. I was trained as heavy equipment operator and heavy equipment mechanic. Where else can you get that type of training while seeing parts of the world. with partial pay for education and medical benefits if you ever need them after you get out.

Tim,
When I was your age every 18 yearold man was subject to being drafted. I say man because if you are old enough to carry a gun for Samuel the Uncle you are a man. Anyway, having the draft hanging over you was no fun and there was no war going on then. The problem was not the possibility of danger, but of disruption of your life and putting a career on hold, not to mention the fact that not everyone has an interest in military life. The Vietnam War came along(I didn't have to, already 3 years into reserve service, reserve not called up then like my old unit has now in Iraq situation)
and the universal draft was much despised. Politicians remember all this and absent a lot more serious invasion than we have faced in the past few years I don't see the draft being reinstated. There is a world of difference in sending volunteers into harms way and dragging off the kid down the street who is not interested in serving. A draft would be political suicide.
Now, we live in a dangerous world and if there is another 9-11 type attack or, heaven forbid, a nuclear attack, then things will change as well they should. I admire your being willing to serve under the circumstances. If you go, know that you will have the support of the public.

well I have heard, and read, that they are going to start the draft for one year, in 09", to "make sure it still works" it would only be a one year deal.. but for a lot of my friends they have the best odds of getting drafted, being that they want men turning 20.. Tim Shultz

Tim,

The government doesn't know what it's going to do tomorrow let alone two years from now. Even if they pass legislation that will institute the draft, they could change their minds at the last minute and forget the whole thing. Until you receive a Western Union telegram containing "greetings" from the President, you shouldn't be one bit concerned.

Good luck,

I served in '70/'71 (Vietnam/Cambodia) The pathetic draft back then just made for a "poor boy's Army". If they do it again they better get it right and include EVERY MALE when 19 yrs. College can wait til AFTER service. There's a slot in the military for every one reguardless of restrictions. It will NEVER fly now-a-days. A good 50% of 19 yr. olds have so little respect for the law (or Uncle Sam) they would never show up. If they did get them in basic , they would just go AWOL and we would spend millions chasing after them.If we caught them and put them in jail , it would more than likely be an upgrade in their standard of living where they came from. Like Dylan said "if ya ain't got nothin , ya ain't got nothin ta lose" This country can't even enforce, effectively, 25% of the present laws , and we think we can institute a draft? No there won't be any '60,s protests , they just won't show! And once the "patriotic" 50% see that , they won't either.
