friday afternoon my 82 year old grandfather had a serious accdident. we really don't know what he was doing, he was on the hiway in front of our house on a trail wagon--the little utility cart you buy at tractor supply--headed towards one of our pasture gates when he turned into a car that was passing him. he clipped the rear on the car and was thrown out, 3 major breaks in his arm, 4 broken ribs, a punctured lung, and 2 broken fingers, and multiple bumps bruises, and scratches make up his injuries. he didn't see the car because he has terrble arthrities, and diabities, and is blind in his left eye, which is the way he was turning. he was transfered to a hospital in a bigger town right after i got to the emergency. he was in a regular room till late sat when he was moved to critical care, as of right now they can't get him stablized and he is on 100% oxygen, and breathing 11-12 breaths per minute, all prayers are needed--4 months ago he ran over my grandmother with the same vehical and broke her collar bone. i guess my time in te corporate world is finally over and its time to move home. please pray for him, we all need it.

former m-i-l thought chevrolet was the french spelling of caterpillar as she was always running her car into something . she finally decided she would drive only in country and small towns as she had fewer cars to hit ( honest ) she must have scared herself a good one as she wouldn't even do that .

Weekend before Thanksgiving I fell off a short ladder, cracked 2 or 3 ribs, collapsed a small part of the lung and thought I was going away. Drs. said the lungs do need to drain so that is good. They monitor the blood oxygen level which even with oxygen in my case got down in the upper 80% range. His may get lower since he won't be taking big breaths for a while.
Anyway, I can identify with him and am praying for his recovery.

Sorry to hear of your Grandfather's accident. I will be praying for his recovery. There is a time when the old people need to stop driving. We had to take the keys away so my Dad would stop driving.

Its time to take his toys away. I know how hard it is but when its time its time. My own grampa wouldn't stop driving so the girls took the keys home with one of them.
I myself had a bad heart attack about 10 years ago and I had to give up driving at an early age. I did it myself because after driving into town I was scared to drive home with myself at the wheel. I still drive my tractors and the truck around the farm but I don't get out on the highway anymore. Boy I sure miss it. I was always a guy who loved to drive anything that I could a hold of.
I sure hope he gets well soon but at 80+ its going to take sometime to get over this.
Walt 68 years young and loving it.

Re: ot--grandpa, bad accident - the last drive in reply to ironsales, 01-08-2007 06:29:59
It reminds me of my own dad. When he was 75 and nearing the end of his life, he told my mother he was going for a drive. Since they were inseparable and nearly always within a few feet of each other, she assumed she was going with him. He said 'No, Honey, this time I'm going alone.' Mom said he was gone for an hour or so and when he came back he hung up the keys. He never drove again and died several months later. I can't imagine how hard it was to take that last drive.

God be with you all. It is my experience that these older gents just need to get out and see what they have loved all their life, hard to let go of your life long scenery. Good luck.
