Hi Brad. Case also made one of those, called VAIW, wharehouse. They had small tires, sat low, some had dualls on rear, cast iron rear fenders for weight, big steel plate in the front. they were made off of the VAI tractor. I found pictures of three of them on the tractor photo section for you. Type in Case VAIW. Charley.

I've still got parts of one that I sold a few years ago. The thing was based on an farmall H engine but sat real low. I've still got the rear end and tranny that came out of it. The reason I junked it was because the tranny have a bunch of broken gears in it. Back before that happened to it this little thing would run down the road around 35 mph which is/was to fast for me.

Mornin' Glen,

A mule is a little outfit that is used to move dead vehicles about in a shop.

Slickest one I ever saw was a WWII aircraft tow bug. Dual tires on the back and was fitted with a pintle hook on the back and a huge front "pusher".

Benig around aircraft while in the Navy in the 60's I saw someone trying to pop wheelies, stand one of these things up on the hitch with the front end up in the air. I think the hitch saved it from going all the way over. The tug had to be pushed back down. Stan

Yeah,

Those were the Ford powered NC-4s or the bigger NC-5 with the generator for jets?

I liked those older ones tho. The old ones with that little flathead Herc motor? Think they used them to tow bomb trailer chains during the war too.

The one our squadron had was like the one you described, four banger flat head, loolked like it was from the forty's. Our planes were twin engine radial type, and had their own power supply. I don't even know why we had the thing, it wasen't used much it was kind of just there. When a plane needed a pull a bigger pull tug was used. Stan

Allen: Thanks for the response. Up a little early this morning. I like having the house/time to myself before anyone gets up. Does anyone have a picture of a shop mule they could post. Maybe it's better if you don't as I may decide I have to have one.

Thanks for posting Allen. Now that I've had my vocabulary lesson for the day....I've always been intrigued by the shop mules in modern shops. New car, truck, tractor, lawnmower, etc. dealerships that sell the "latest and greatest" frequently get the job done behind the scenes with a relic refitted for their needs. I have never been drawn to "out of the box" devices/vehicles, but rather something brought back from the dead, and working as good or better than a flimsy/sparkling new one. That's probably the common bond of our YT community.

Glenn
